or should I be looking for something like Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 for landscapes and more general purpose lens? I didn't find 18mm wide enough on my recent holiday when trying to photograph things like waterfalls so probably not but I always welcome other peoples thoughts and experience.
I recently purchased this lens. It's pretty fabulous if you're okay with its quirks.
Now the difference between 17mm and 18mm it wouldn't be worth it if you're satisfied with sharpness. But check the FOV for each lens... I'm told the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 is wider than Sigma's 17-50, but have no Tamron to confirm.
Sigma's ART 18-35 f/1.8 from what I e seen of my friends' shots is probably the sharpest lens on the market - possibly sharper than many primes in the same range.
I also have an old 14mm HSM Sigma prime. Built like a tank, a lens with some interesting character - and quite wide. It's great for interior architecture shots. However not the sharpest lens out there.
