Still experimenting with my brilliant new D3100. Took this photo yesterday evening and would welcome your comments. I'm now trying to move away from the auto modes

Twilight.jpg

D3100
18-55 VR at 35mm, VR off.
Shutter Priority mode.
1/40th sec, f5, ISO 3200
Original format NEF

Perhaps not very inspiring but I live in a small village with limited transport. Having to wrack my brains to find subjects of interest to photograph. The waterway is the Marne-Rhine Canal in eastern France and boats can just be detected. I love sunsets and will take many more photos when I can.

Nice picture, I agree with ST about lower ISO. I suppose you didn't shoot from a tripod did you? Why didn't you use VR? I am not familiar with VR but I read that the handheld shutterspeed can go down by a few stops (although I don't know if you can go much lower than 1/40). That way you could decrease the ISO evenly. Or even better: shoot from a tripod.

I think you have left this one a little late, as there is just too much in silhouette for my taste. I'm sure there is a lot of interesting stuff here but its all lost to the dark. the sky is probably a little past its best too. Same spot a little earlier with better light will be worth a reshoot IMO.
