Trouble with D810 pop-up flash

We just bought a D810 and haven't been able to get the built-in pop up flash to work.

When we open up the flash, it fails to charge. We also can't assess the flash mode with the flash button and the main command dial on the camera - nothing happens.

Any suggestions?

put it in the GREEN auto mode go in a dark room and try and take a picture. It should pop up and fire. If it fires that means the flash works and you are doing something wrong shooting the way you were trying before.

Fails to charge means what? Is the flash Ready indicator on? That's the Lightning bolt symbol at lower right end of the Viewfinder, #17 on page 6 of the D810 manual. It should be On if the flash door is open.

The flash mode is menu E3, page 331. TTL, Manual, or Commander.

The flash sync modes are page 191. You say "nothing happens", but that seems impossible. If you hold the flash button (#2 on page 2), you should see the sync menu in the top LCD (page 190 & 191).

If you open the flash door, it should flash with the shutter button in any camera mode A, S, P, or M. Only two reasons I can think of that it will not flash.

1. the shutter commonly wont trigger if it cannot find focus. If the shutter does not trigger, then flash does not trigger either.

2. If you have Auto FP on (menu E1, page 321), and the shutter speed is faster than sync speed (1/320 second). The internal flash cannot do Auto FP mode. Try a shutter speed slower than 1/250 second.

The D810 has (according to the Manual) P A S M modes - so it is "P" for programmed auto that should bring the built in flash flipping up.

P is not Auto..... Auto does Auto WB and Auto ISO and not sure what else Auto, but P does only if those features are selected.

The top cameras (with only A, S, P, M, and no Auto) never automatically pop up the internal flash. If you want to use it, then you open its door. If not, you don't. And all the models do it that way in A, S, P or M.

I dont understand your problem Have you read the manual ?

I have a D810 and if you want to use the in built flash first open it using the button on the side of the camera!!!
It does NOT pop up automatically when you select a mode any mode.
When you half press the shutter button to focus the flash ready symbol should appear in your viewfinder bottom right.

If when you try a shot and it doesn't work then you have a faulty D810.
There is no menu option to disable it that I am aware of.

Has the OP actually responded after the initial question?

And yes you can disable the flash if I remember correctly.
