Tripod ??

I have a 30+ year old Slik U212 and it is an outstanding tripod but it does admittedly strain somewhat under the weight of my 12+ pound 600mm f/4 AIS Nikkor. I have a very sturdy Bogen studio tripod which handles it like a champ but it is somewhat cumbersome to take to the field, it is a good 7 pounds all by itself

That is definitely a heavy set-up. if it does great and you don't mind the weight then it is all good.

I use my Sirui carbon fiber mono pod almost constantly outdoors. I just upgraded to a much better ball head for it and the two together cost just over 200.00 I would never have thought that I would spend that sort of money for something like that. But it makes a world of difference. I have a decent tripod, and will be using it this weekend when I go to a wildlife refuge because my 2x converter demands it. But like I said. I prefer a mono pod even for simple shooting.

I love that.. Looks like I'm upgrading. Good thing I bought through amazon.. That much easier for exchanges.. The tilt head is great for macro work.. The ravelli pro 70 with pistol grip.. Seems great,

If you can have a tripod for all your shots, that would be great. But realistically speaking, most times you just got to do it handheld especially on the move.

There red will be occasions you wish you have a tripod. When traveling light, tripod is something you will not plan to be part of your luggage. I am now considering the Gorillapod. At least I can put it in my camera bag.

Another way to say this is that I use my tripod about 50% of the time that I should use the tripod. And most of those shots are not great. If you should use a tripod - use it if you need a great shot. If good enough will do - then maybe you save yourself the trouble of setting up the rig and get away with hand held using whatever you can use to steady the shot.

I have 3 tripods and 2 monopods. Each tripod and monopod has a specific purpose. The big one on the left (Manfrotto 055) is for studio work. Middle one (Ace 400) for field work. The one on the right (Slik Sprint Pro GM) is for schlepping around the city or whatever, where space is at a premium.

The monopods are: Manfrotto (big aluminum one) - sporting events. Benro (small black one) - general use.
