i got this tripod for xmas and noticed this, i cannot seem to fix it, i take it i need to return it to the store

2013 Dec TKD clips 004 - YouTube

the knob to turn it only goes less than a quarter turn, it wont fall off but the looseness is annoying, everything else locks down perfect, maybe just a faulty head.

its a vanguard alta pro 263at with a sbh 100 ballhead

any ideas?

Are you saying that side knob does not tighten it up? I have this tripod/head. My side knob loosens-tightens about 1 3/4 turn. If you look down on the plate, you should be able to see that movable piece move. Total travel is about 1/8" to snug the camera plate down.

We're you demonstrating the loose camera plate? Some plates are not fully compatible if you are using a quick release lever vice clamp for the arca Swiss type.

He's got the correct plate there, same as mine. The side knob should tighten it right down.

Remove the camera/plate from the head and see if you can screw in the tightening knob a little further.

There may be some machining stuff inside the threads...

Cheers, Don

I have the same head and tripod. The plate screw should turn a full 1 1/2 rev from full open to locked tight. If it does not, there is something caught in the threads or they are mis-cut. Take it back for a trade, as the screw can not be removed for cleaning.

still no movement with the knob, i can barely see the locking bar move, i take it when you screw the knob to tighten the plate that gap will almost close over, defo something is stopping the thread turning

Yes, that gap fully closes. I just tried mine. I also saw it is spring loaded. If you have it fully open, you can put a finger on each side of the knob and push the vise plate in to close the gap without tightening the screw. Maybe you can determine that way if something is jamming the slide or if its the threads. And since you will probably be returning it, you might as well force it,lol. Maybe there is a one-time bad thread in there that will clear itself. I hate having to return stuff.
I like this tripod, I would definitely stick with it and get a replacement if need be. I just bought an sb-50 head for my monopod so I can use the same camera plate.

yes the plate will close when i do that, so its pointing to a bad thread, forceful turn then? and yes i will be keeping this even if i do need to return it

i recently got magic dust (or something) for a dried up door lock and it freed it up in a couple of pushes, wonder should i try some of that?

well thats it fixed, a few forceful turns did the trick, turning about 3/4 and no movement, cheers for all the help people, much appreciated.
