Tripod Head recommendations OR a DIY fix??

Thanks Alan.. Would you know how these would work with a heavier load?
not much the D7000 with the 105 or the 70-300?
Cos the max weight this shows as 5kg & the 498RC2 i have states a max load of 9 kgs and still creeps

looking at my manfrotto 496 i do not see how you would have any slop unless something has been damaged. I pop in my qr plate and it is not fully tight, needs just a little push on the "clutch" then it doesn't move. You may try a metal shim at the front or back of the qr plate to see if that tightens up the plate.

The pan tilt head i have weighs twice as much as the one pictured and holds the D300 plus the 50-500mm...

I dont know how the Vanguard would be but their equipment is usually pretty good....

i wasn't expecting it to either...
am gonna try something like you suggested
