Too many choices

f/2.8 would be nice (mostly for flash at f/4), but the 24-120 f/4 is a great lens. It is my easy walk-around-all-day-with-one-lens choice for FX. (120 FX compares to 80mm DX, but many megapixels allow easy cropping).

But in that use, 24mm is not very wide for DX. I think you need to experiment with a 24mm limit before deciding. I previously used the 16-85 for that all-day purpose with DX, it goes much better for wide shots.

Once on vacation, D800 FX was filling up the memory card, and I got the notion to switch it to DX mode to conserve space. But 24mm simply doesn't do it for DX, I was continually switching back to FX mode, to get the width in.

Based on what you've posted in this thread, I concur on th 24-120 f4 from Nikon.

In looking around I found this Amazon.com : Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Lens for Nikon Digital SLR (White Box) + AUD Essential Accessory Bundle : Camera & Photo

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens New in White Box $619.99
This raised huge red flags. That glass is about $1,300 new from Nikon. Even a 'white box' it sounds suspect at only $620.

Even a nikon refurb is $899: Refurbished AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR from Nikon

I'm wondering if it was from a grey body/lens kit. B&H is selling the US D750 body only at $1996.95. The US kit is listed at $2696.95 making the lens worth around $700.

EDIT: Nikon Rumors listed a grey market combo at $2199.99 a while back.

Deal of the day: grey market Nikon D750 camera with 24-120mm f/4 lens for $2,199.99 | Nikon Rumors

Could very well be. When an online retailer offers a new lens at about 50% of new retail, it's a flag :)
That lens (at least the one I saw when I looked) is being sold through Amazon by Get It Digital; and that means it's a grey market item. That being said, I've gotten a few items from Get It Digital and nary a problem, they have an outstanding record with the BBB, have excellent reviews etc., but they ARE grey market.

Since it is through Amazon I am fairly happy with it. Normally lenses if bad will be bad when you get them so sending it back should be easy. Past that how often do lenses have to have warranty work? For the difference in cost I am risking it.

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm f/4G ED VR is on the way. Will be here Friday. I like Amazon Prime.
Let me know how you like that lens when you get it. I bought my D750 with that lens as a kit from B&H back in November when it was on sale. Since then, I picked up the Nikon 28-300mm which has about the same weight and is actually 1:3.5 as opposed to the 1:4. I don't really shoot with a long zoom all the time, but I haven't personally found much reason to carry the 24-120mm when given a choice of the two. Just curious as to what you guys like and don't like with this one.

Ok, not a lot of free time today but I did get out in the middle of the day and shoot for a couple minutes then back out late day. Tried to shoot some difficult areas just to see what it would do. Here is what I got.

Finally got time and energy to Fine Tune My 24-120 F4. The previous shots were all at 0. The FoCal set the fine tune at +4 which is a bit of a difference so I expect the sharpness should be better than it already was. Here is a test shot of a focus target. It was shot at F10 which is what FoCal says is the sharpest part of the lens. It was shot at 120mm which is the long end of the lens and the target was 20 feet away. The square of the target is 5.25 inches which is pretty small. Standard postprocessing was done to the shot so it is pretty real world. Going out of town tomorrow so I hope to get a few shots with this lens.
