Tokina 11-16mm Help me spend my money!

Like others have said it seems to be a toss of a coin. I think the 2.8 is important to me and so is sharpness. That has just tipped me over to the 11-16 DX II.
I realised post and packaging on the used one is £16, whereas it is free on the new one so the price difference is not so much. I'll order it today I think.

I have the older Tokina 11-16, I love it, but the only criticism I can make is the flare issue when shooting into the sun, I believe the newer one has a different/better or extra coating so would hopefully be better equiped to handle the flare. I think you will be very happy with your decision.

I've been batting around options for a wide-angle lens for a couple of weeks now, and this discussion seems to be tipping me into yet another direction, with more exploration required. Thank you, gentlemen ... it's always enlightening to hang around here.

Just when I thought my mind was made up a couple of small spanners have been thrown into the works.

It turns out that there is a free postage promotion this weekend so I can get the newer 11-16mm used for £304. I think that's the way I'll go, I did see the Tokina 11-20mm mint for £300 earlier today but that's gone already.

I think you will be very happy with the Tokina 11-16 on the D7100. That is the same setup I have and it served me well and now my wife won't let it go.

I bought the Tokina 11-16 F2.8 so I could shoot in doors without using a flash.(churches) It's always nice to have the option.
Good Luck with your choice.

I did buy the 11-16 DXI when I started, I tried 50mm first, 11-16 solved some things I could not do with 50mm.

Many recommend it and I do understand why, even if ultra wide angle is speciality lens, it is probably underused by most. I`m trying to go full FX on lenses, but this one is the exception the 11-16 is a fantastic 16mm f2.8 FX lens btw.

Anti-GAS militant, do not spend your money. You should know very well how you will use this to justify .

Important topics I find in ultra wide:
- Yes it is sharp
- It can take 77mm filters, on ultrawide something you will want to use at one stage
- Close focus distance to show small subjects in their context
- Zone focussing is different on most lenses, but you would use it

Less important: f2.8 on short focus distance it has been less limiting then on longer lenses

I bought a used (although it looks brand new) 11-16mm DX II in the end. I still have a lot to learn about using an ultra wide but I'm loving it so far. I think I will want to pick up some filters next, probably some grad filters first.

Here are some of my first shots with it.
