This lens is rubbish?

Despite the reviews, I've been having a bit of fun this week, using an old 43-86f3.5AI on the D610, just to see how bad it is. Well so far I haven't seen how bad, rather how good! Yes it has pronounced distortion at the long and short ends, the zoom range isn't great and it isn't perfect by any means, but it's actually a lot sharper than I expected and gives very usable results, providing you're careful!

Has anyone tried 'crap' lenses that don't turn out to be crap after all?

Lots of name-brand oldies still are in the pro-grade territory, just without the bells and whistles.

I've read the same thing about this lens, yet one of my brothers has used it for many years with excellent results. Thanks for your great shots!

Every lens has a sweet spot and every person with an internet account has an opinion, and they don't always mix. Marcel routinely goes out with a plastic 28-80mm ($50) on his D600 and takes marvelous shots. Never judge a lens purely on internet opinion.

Yes that plastic 28-80 is another one I don't mind!
