I feel you. My youngest Pit is 4 months and when I'm too close, also very curious what the thing in front of my face is. I had to get lens hoods only because they occasionally try to lick it.

I agree with using a 200mm lens. They are just awesome for portraits. The way I see it is if being close to a dog. Your most likely going to be on one knee while shooting. The dog is going to think you want his attention and come to you.

Thanks for helping me out guys, just got my D7100 + Sigma 18-250mm f3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM. Looks fantastic. I couldnt afford a lens like Nikon18-300, for the price Sigma seems a good way to go.
My next lens should be a 35mm 1.4G or 50mm 1.4G. Maybe after that I'll be able to get better zoom lens.
