Then we push you to a Raynox 250, but that is for another day LOL

Is that a macro on DX or does it work like a 90mm macro on FX buddy? Because I have the 105mm micro, but I'm trying to avoid cropping, to get the most out of this awesome D800E as you know my friend! :)

As you have seen on the spider photo I'm needing a wider debth of field. So maybe next time I find that tiny spider I'll be able to finally get a good shot of it! Lol :)
If you put a DCR-250 on the 105 it would get you alot closer with a narrower depth of field though. I use my Raynox on my 90mm Macro.

Oh I see. Narrower DOF when getting a more fully filled frame. Bummer! So it's cropping or very shallow DOF. Do you know anyway around that on my D800E buddy?

Hey maybe a 200mm micro? Can you get a better DOF while still expanding the subject in the frame without cropping using that Scott?

Hey J-see you have the Nikkor 200mm micro, is this doable using that lens my friend?

@Bill16 can't believe I'm going to suggest an additional piece of equipment for you, but have you considered extension tubes to use for macro work? Vello makes a set that is much less expensive than the Kenko set and still allows AF compatibility. Both the Vello set and the Kenko set maintain the AF capability whereas most of the others do not. A used set would cost even less.

I once had one extension tube for my am 105mm micro I use to have. But I haven't tried any with my af-d version nor a AF capable extension tube. I can't remember if the DOF was thinner or not doing it that way. But it is something I would consider doing again if I have to!

Thanks for the suggestion and the link my friend! :)

I don't really understand the question Bill. My DOF depends upon the magnification/aperture combination. Anything I add to the lens, like the close-up or extension tube, only indirectly affects my DOF since it affects the minimum and maximum focus distance of my lens. It's because I have to get closer to focus, or can get closer, my magnification changes and that's what has an effect on my DoF.

Adding diopter to my lens makes it just as hard to focus as any other. I have more working distance and thus can add a bit more before I start squeezing my subject but it doesn't make it easier to find focus.

Here's a table to check your focus distance according the diopter you have:

diopter.jpg

If you know the focus distance of your lens and add the 4.8 or 8 of the Raynox, you know where your focus is situated.

My lens focuses from infinity to 50cm which is from 0 to 2D. If I add 4 diopter, the focus shifts from 4D to 6D which implies I lose infinity and can only focus between 25cm and somewhere around 17cm. My focus range from max to minimum suddenly is only 7-8 cm which explains why it becomes so hard to focus on the subject.

Here's my most recent activity with the Raynox 250 on the 70-300mm VR. ;)

This little lass is about 1/3 the size of my pinky nail. DEFINITELY hard to spot, much less get in focus, but I finally hit the shot I wanted! That pattern under her feet is from the styrofoam cup she was standing on. ;)

I'm trying to use my D800E for macro, and still fill the frame with the subjects like I use to using a DX! The Nikkor 105mm micro won't fill the frame on my FX and I was hoping a Nikkor 200mm micro would be able to fill the frame with my subjects so I can avoid cropping or external lenses like the raynox 250!:)

The 200mm is 1:1 identical as the 105mm so in regards to filling the frame it makes no difference. I'm just a bit further from the subject when I hit my max.

I was afraid of that! Lol oh well it was worth a shot! Now I just don't have an excuse to get one! Lol :)

Thanks my friend for confirming my suspicions! :)

Even while it is a sharp lens and does very well on the 8xx series, she does come at a price. If you AF the lens you can have a shave while she goes through the focus range. The length hinders flash use if you're into that and when focusing handheld it can be that hard you are often close to a mental breakdown.

But I wouldn't trade her for any other.

I think it is the movement of the front lens that is giving me fits using my Nikkor AF 105mm micro d lens. An af-s lens might make it a bit easier, but I don't remember if I have any! Lol :)

But I'll keep working on it and go for slightly bigger bugs! Lol It's just that that spider has been driving me nuts, because my wife thinks it's pretty and getting it all in focus seems to be impossible! Lol :)
But I'll keep working my raynox combo, and buy some good extension tubes when I can to try it that way too next time I run across one of the little bugger's! Lol :)

I'd still like to have the Nikkor 200mm micro, but I can't think of a reason good enough to spend that much on it! Maybe a AI version might be fun but cheap in comparison! Lol :)
