The Power of a D800

One of my clients wrote me today and forwarded me a photo of the mural they made with one of my images taken at Blacks Beach in La Jolla. And while many take issue with the large file sizes the D800 produces, the truth of the matter is that you can do some pretty amazing things when you have so many pixels to play with!

Did the client provide the measurements? Curious as to how big that actually is. I can kind of judge by the table, kind of.

No, nothing other than they still needed to trim parts of it. I know I've never attempted to print anything that large so it was nice to see it was possible.

Is it just the image printed large or did they upsize it with genuine fractal or similar program.

Looks spectacular how they used it.

I have no idea. The file I sent her was over 45 Mb's so it had a good lot of data summed up within it. I'd like to think it came directly out of the original file but it is possible that whom ever blew it up did some kind of algorithm to it.

Damnit, Dave. I've been looking for excuses NOT to pull the trigger on a D800 this week because of the $200 instant rebate...and this is NOT helping.

Someone hide my credit card.

I have a D800, but I find myself using the D600 more often. Then I see something like this and wonder if I'm potentially shorting myself when a great shot comes along - not that I have friends who might want a wall full of my picture.

Really nice, Dave.

Checked with the CFO last night and showed her Dave's pic. Think I'll be visiting MPEX today and walking out with some gold boxes.

This below will answer that question depending on the size of the final print and the dpi at which it was printed (ie: the standard used for that kind of medium). It looks like the D800 maxes out just shy of a bus shelter print (albeit at 115 dpi) of 46x67" so around 4x5.5 feet in size.

However, if you go with a standard (not hi res) billboard at 6 dpi, the D800 could produce the following billboard size:

68.2 FEET x 102.2 FEET

If you prefer an uncommon HI-RES billboard, you could go up to

37 FEET x 55.8 FEET

:)
