The jump from D3100 to D7100 - First Impressions

TALK ABOUT PIXEL PEEPING!!! With that many MPs packed into the DX sensor, I have discovered that I can zoom in to 200% and have a fairly clear image still, whereas on the D3100, there was definitely strong pixelation occurring! Also, starting to dig through the recent D7100 guide I bought (by Darrell Young) I'm learning even more every day.

Foreign concept, I know, relating a piece of technology to the animal kingdom, but... this thing is a PRIMAL BEAST!

I bought the same book...I'd recommend any of his books...I still refer back to it when I need to.

While I haven't read any of his books...I have read David Busch's Nikon D5100 and D7100 books. I learned a lot about shooting in all sorts of conditions and his graphics are second to none. I guess since I haven't read any other guide books, I'd have to at least say that David Busch's Guides are amazing.

3) The viewfinder on the D7100 is... (you thought I was going to say "primal beast" again, didn't you? Wrong!) refined elegance. First, it's 40% larger, and for this guy in his mid 40's, that's a HUGE difference!

Not actually meaning to question anything, just curious a little, about the 40%?

I have not used either camera, but feel certain I would also prefer the benefits of the D7100 features too.

Ninkon specs say this about viewfinders:

D3100:
Penta-mirror
95% frame coverage
Magnification: 0.8
eyepoint: 18 mm

D7100:
Pentaprisim
100% frame coverage
Magnification: 0.94
eyepoint: 19.5 mm

I have these two:

D300
Pentaprisim
100% frame coverage
Magnification: 0.94
eyepoint: 19.5 mm

D800:
Pentaprisim
100% frame coverage
Magnification: 0.7 (of FX frame 1.5x larger, which would seem 0.7 x 1.5 = 1.05x DX equivalent)
eyepoint: 17 mm

It's hard to describe the FX view... with same lens, the frame view is a 1.5x wider view, a bigger wider scene, but in the frame view, the objects in the scene are 2/3 size, a little smaller. Simply because the scene is bigger.

I am unsure of specific meaning of magnification. Obviously NOT in relation to naked subject view, since focal length zoom makes all bets be off.

My guess it means we see the DX 24x16mm frame at 0.8 size, as if 19.2x12.8mm size?
Eyepoint is eye relief, where the eye is placed behine eye piece.

But I cannot account for 40% in there?

You get 100% viewfinder coverage, both in horizontal and vertical gain, vs. just 95% on the D3100. Then, throw in the magnification difference and the eyepoint difference, and it's noticeably larger. I felt like it was "half again" as big/clear as the D3100, but reading a few reviews here and there, a few folks estimate around 40%. Snapsort's comparison does too, for the quickest find, but it's been known to miss things before. *shrug* Either way, it's a helluva lot bigger and clearer to these mid 40's eyes.

OK, thanks, just curious.

It would seem to me that the difference between specs of 0.8 vs 0.94 is 0.14, and 0.14/0.8 = 17.5% larger. 0.94 / 0.8 is 1.175
At least that is my own interpretation.

The low end models (D70, D40, D3200, D5200, etc) have been 0.75 and 0.8 magnification.
The next level up (D80, D200, D300, D7000, etc) have been 0.94.

FX has been 0.7, but the FX frame is already 1.5x larger (D700 says 95% and 0.72)

I've never understood why that would be an advanced feature, but clearly Nikon thinks it is.

I went from D80 to D7100 on 1st Jan this year. I already feel like it's the only camera I have owned. I've only touched on it's capabilities I'm certain. I love the fast shutter response despite taking quite a few random accidental shots. I love the feature of being able to set bracketing and the shutter respose dial to timer to just take all the 5 exposures. I haven't used my remote shutter release since 1st Jan!! :D

Have had my Nikon D7100 since October of last year.. I am totally in love with it LOL! It was hard to learn & took me a good month or longer to learn all the ins & outs so to speak but it was easy once I got the hang of it, I shoot in manual mode only so that was kind of hard to figure out some of the settings for that- had to watch some YT videos lol!

BURST MODE! PRIMAL BEAST GOES EVEN MORE PRIMAL!!!

I used to think... 3 FPS! Wow, that's a lot of rapid fire shooting! I've used the 3 fps quite a few times, shooting at the Scottish Games, quick bursts trying to catch an animal leaping, etc., but finally got the chance to test out the D7100 and it's 6 FPS at the ball game. PHENOMENAL! I was, of course, shooting in RAW + JPEG mode, so I filled the buffer quite quickly, but the extra speed DOES make a difference! If I wasn't worried about shutter life (as I want this camera to hang around for a while) I would always shoot in CH, as that rapid fire shutter just makes me feel like a pro! LOL Just something about holding a camera to your eye as it goes "snik-snik-snik-snik-snik-snik" before you even have the chance to think "WOW, that's fast!" For action sports, what a feature! CAN. NOT. WAIT. for the next Scottish Games to see what I was missing between clicks last year!

Now I wonder: what the heck does a D4S feel like firing off at 11 FPS? (No, I won't be upgrading any time soon. ;) )

On vacation next week, so hoping to get a chance to work with more than just a "down the street" shot using bracketing to get a nice HDR.

On the other hand, was disappointed to find out that the Vello Glass LCD Protector only comes with the glass for the back LCD and not the top LCD. Ordering the Vello for the back anyway, but now need to find out where to get something for the top. Also, I need to start researching (and saving for, I guess) rapid straps, as wearing this "beast" around the neck all day long definitely wears a fellow down.

Pretzel, I both love and hate this thread!
Just as awesome as it is to read about your experiences with the primal beast, just as much am I just totally green with envy ;)

A few weeks ago I tried a frinds' D7000 which just made everything so much worse. Damn you, NAS!!!
