This is really a very nice lens. I did opt for the Nikon f4 for size/weight. A few things to research in reviews are that it's true focal length may only be 186mm and at "200mm" some report it to be "soft".

Not for me, but it really depends on what you will be shooting. This is more of an occasional lens for me and I wanted the lighter weight for hiking. I really like it for my train shots. If you shoot a lot of people/low light/sports, I would go with a 2.8.

Maybe it's a small issue, but one thing that I didn't like about the Nikon 70-300 is that the lens rotates when you focus. Makes using a polarizer a bit tricky. I'm getting ready to buy the Tamron.

You sure you mean the 70-300 f/4.5-5.6? I'm looking at one of these and that's not what Thom Hogan says "...The front of the lens doesn't rotate during zoom, nor during focus operations." I assume you are referring to one of the 70-200 variants? :)

I was planning on asking what lens case is being used to store all the new Tamrons, but realized that nobody has really posted that they bought one. I'm pretty close to pulling the trigger, but keep putting it off. Not a fan of spending money. And then there's the Tamron 24-70 2.8VC that I'm really tempted to get as well...
Anyway, if anyone does have this lens, please let us know what lens case you got for it. I realize all the cases online have measurements listed, but those measurements are not always entirely accurate. I lucked out on my 50mm, 70-200 F4, etc., but I've also had to send back about 3 cases now for being either too small or too huge.

Sure it doesn't come with a case? My Sigma 70-200/2.8 OS and my Sigma 150-500 OS both came with great study padded cases. :)

I noticed a couple of 3rd party lenses recently that don't include cases or pouches when new, both Sigma and Tamron (larger zooms). Haven't noticed any lens without one from Tokina, & Samyang always include a pouch or case.
