I find it just a little too dark for my taste... especially with the shadows which clearly indicate a bright day. I would add a little exposure and contrast and bump the shadow detail a bit.. You have edit OK so here is what I was thinking of...

Others I am sure will other opinions and more useful comments as I am a reasonable rookie too.. so .. Just my opinion..

I like it, but would have liked to see a little more of the shadow details. Overall just a little dark for me, particularly given that you can see the shadow on the wall which tells me there was some sunlight there to be had.

(Edit: And that's what I get for popping the post open in a new tab and not responding for 15 minutes. LOL)

Thank you for your feedback. What I actually wanted is to put emphasis on her face, so face lighter, rest darker. Isolate her beautiful face/expression. I'm not that good in postprocessing so I made kind of low-key edit. The original is like the RockyNH version. I'm sure there is a way to put a controlpoint on her face and darken only the rest of the photo.

I'm not much into B&W photography but this image doesn't demand smoothness, in fact a little grain wouldn't hurt this scene.
Very nice composition.
The shot is taken well above her eye height but that works well on this photo in my opinion.

I like the colour version much better too, especially with what you said in post #8, but if the intention is to show poverty rather than beauty the B&W has it.

Actually I don't know if she is poor. It might as well be that she is a student earning some extra money with her hobby.

Is there anything that I can improve in that picture, or that I can keep in mind when shooting next time?

Don, imho your last edit is a little bit overdone. Grainy and, I don't know how that effect is called, the lines (eg. in the face) are too obvious.

Here's my last edit:
