The last couple of nights I have had the chance to visit York Minster after dark, to get some shots...

I know I have posted a few pictures of York, mainly the huge Minster that we are lucky enough to have... But there is much more to this beautiful place that I'm lucky enough to live in... The City started out being called "Jorvik" when it was first raided and settled by the Vikings, and later "Eboracum" when it was taken over and fortified by the Romans.

For a medieval city, there is lots of strange things around...

Mad Alice Lane - This "Lane" got its name from a woman, who was hanged for being insane (Pre-healthcare, obviously!)
dsc_3880-edit.jpg

Whip-ma-whop-ma-gate - Believed to be the original site of York's Stocks and whipping post, where criminals and ner-do-wells were beaten, normally to death.

York Shambles - One of the narrowest streets in the country
dsc_3897-edit.jpg

An open doorway into one of the old buildings, now a shop selling strange liqueurs
dsc_3894-edit.jpg

And finally this lady... She only appears after dark near the minster - My wife couldn't see her and she simply disappeared after I took this....
dsc_3935-edit.jpg

(Actually, the last bit isn't true... She's a tour guide who dresses up for tourists... But it doesn't half scare the $*!t out of you when she floats past after dark at the end of her shift!)

WOW, Steve, That is a wonderful look at York. One day I will visit there, but for now, thanks for letting me enjoy the scenery. Keep shooting York, I really enjoy the quaintness.

More York after dark....

The house of Guy Fawkes' parents... Guy Fawkes was responsible for the gun powder plot, where he planted LOTS of gun powder under the Houses of Parliament in an attempt to kill the King James I. in 1605 and restore a Catholic monarch to the throne. (This why the UK celebrate Bonfire night on November 5th). Guy Fawkes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

York Minster dominates the rest of the City. There is a ban on any building being taller in the immediate area to preserve the city's historical skyline. Also, new buildings within the city walls must maintain an traditional appearance.... No glass skyscrapers here!
dsc_3909-edit.jpg

Roman Pillar outside the Minster... The pillar was found during maintenance of the Minster's foundations, where it was moved back to it's original location. The pillar was part of a Roman building dated at 71 AD.
dsc_3918-edit.jpg

The Plaque on the pillar... The text reads:
THIS ROMAN COLUMN ONCE STOOD WITHIN THE GREAT HALL OF THE HEADQUARTERS
BUILDING OF THE FORTRESS OF THE SIXTH LEGION (WHOSE EMBLEM WAS A BULL) IN THE
FOURTH CENTURY A.D. IT WAS FOUND IN 1969 DURING THE EXCAVATION OF THE SOUTH
TRANSEPT OF THE MINSTER, LYING WHERE IT HAD COLLAPSED.
IT WAS GIVEN BY THE DEAN AND CHAPTER TO THE YORK CIVIC TRUST WHO IN 1971
ERECTED IT ON THIS SITE TO MARK THE 1900 TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDATION OF
THE CITY BY THE ROMANS IN A.D. 71.

A few more shots from around York city centre.

This is Bootham Bar, one of the gateways in to the city through the walls, with the Minster in the background. I had to cut the lower part of the walls as the traffic and roadworks weren't very picturesque! Maybe next time...

King's Manor - This is the University of York's Archaeology department... With a city this old, there is lots still being found in and around the City. My grandfather once dug up some Roman coins in his back garden.. They are in the museum now.
dsc_4294.jpg

Finally, one of the new shops. I went in, but they wouldn't give me either. :(
