Special Bag Requirement

Two weeks to my Alaska Cruise departure. I am also doing the land tour which includes Denali. Carry bag restrictions are 17 X 14 X 4. This rules out my Pelican case (way to large anyway}, Lowepro back pack (too large) and smaller Lowepro Stealth reporter (too small) and I want to take my D810, 24-70 and my Tamron 150-600. The sling type would be ideal but not sure if they are large enough. Only other items I will be taking on the daily trips will be a couple of extra batteries and some memory cards, small blower. Any suggestions appreciated.

Is the bag restriction for the cruise or land tours? You can make extra room by carrying the camera around your neck and filling its spot with other stuff. I hated the restrictions that I had going to a few places and found carrying cameras on me removed enough weight for my bags/cases this included Africa and Vietnam.

I'm just curious, does this smaller limit apply to the land cruise or the airline? Most airlines allow a little larger.

Restrictions are for the land portion. Buses and trains. It would be nice to have a single bag. Maybe a tote of some sort and some foam for packing would work.

Bill - if you have a back pack that meets the size requirement, I recently purchased this camera pad insert from Amazon and it provides a decent protection for my grab and go kit. I purposely included my biggest lenses that I have which are the Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 mounted on the D3s and 300mm f4 AFS lenses which are close to the size of your Tamron 150-600. Might be worth the shot.

24 cm X 32 cm x 15cm
H x W x D
9.4 " x 12.5" x 6" (Inches)

Price $15.99

The Tamron is 12 inches long, I would have to lay it down on the bottom and put the camera and 24-70 on top. Thanks Glenn for the tip on the padded liner, good possibility.

At only 4" wide, how could you even fit a large lens into a padded case or bag? Wow.

Just got this one off amazon Amazon.com: Deluxe Digital Camera / Video Padded Backpack For Nikon, Canon, Sony, Pentax DSLR Cameras, Nikon D300, D300S, D3000, D3100, D3200, D3300, D5000, D5100, D5200, D5300 & Many More SLR / DSLR Cameras + eCost Microfiber Cloth: Camera & Photo

I wouldn't use it a lot but for the trip should be ok, Tamron fits snug at the bottom and the camera with 24-70 attached fits above. even some room/pockets for batteries and memory cards.

Leaving for the big city in the morning to fly to Vancouver on Saturday, cruise starts on Sunday, my little back pack has my D810, 24-70, Tamron 150-600, battery in the camera, 3 spare batteries, charger, 10-32GB cards, 2-16GB cards, 4-8GB cards, lens pen, small blower, circular polarizer for both lenses. Batteries all charged, sensor cleaned, lenses cleaned. I removed the grip, tripod mount for the Tamron to travel as light as possible. I know my Canadians friends will laugh but I have never taken a pic of an eagle, I am loaded for eagles, bears and whales! I will post some upon my return, August 2nd is when it comes to an end. Adios
