Spare Battery

I'm looking to get a spare battery for my trip to Egypt. I don't want to be hours away from a charger for my battery to run out.

is it worth getting the Nikon battery, or are there any cheaper alternatives? does it matter?

I bought for my D80 a Nikon and never have a problem.

Now I am waiting for my D5100 of a Nikon spare battery. Still no nikon in Thailand.

Honestly, a battery costs not the world.

I'll buck the trend here and tell you I've used Wasabi batteries in all three of my Nikons over the years. They're as good as any Nikon branded battery I've used at a fraction of the cost. In fact the only battery I've ever had trouble with was a Nikon branded battery that wouldn't hold a charge.

I can understand if you want to go with a branded battery, but the Wasabi variant for your '3100 is this one and goes for less than $25.

Nikon brand batteries are "chipped" to work with the camera. Is the Wasabi battery chipped?

I agree. I use two Wasabi EL15 with my D600 and the Nikon brand. I rotate them around about once a month. They work fine for me.
