I don't know...I think he is alright...I remember when I was starting with the cameras....I did indeed know a lot from the beginning but boy I knew nothing as well...I still think I know a lot but then again I still learn everyday so maybe I don't know squat....

You folks teach me new crap and new angles just about everyday as a matter of fact. :)

Now Jason if you had a D7000 and complained about soft focus I might believe you! LOL

Youl know, you see it in every group. the PDA's you will see peopel bicker about the best one, peopel always arguing that what they have is best.
you see it in the MAC and pc fight, morons fighting to the death about chit that just doen't matter.

people all fighting ford vs Chevi.

The smart phones, everyone adimant not only that theirs is the best, but that all others suck.

Chalenge someones choice oin posissions, and it is like chalenging their religion.

Come to a Nikon board, and post cannon is better, and every raging troll on the board is available to light things up. All with something to prove.

I came here saying I was having a problem with my 5100.
NOBODY said "the images are fine"
and nobody told me "it is somethign you are doing wrong"

There were sugestions to try a different lens, or maybe a few settings.
But there sure were a lot of douchbags smart asses and trolls.

I'm old school - anything slower than 100 shutter speed is dangerous...maybe a little slower with a wide angle...definitely faster with a long telephoto.

I do like ISO 100 but I usually shoot 200...if I had a D5100 I would probably go ISO 400...that is just me though... :)

Nor am I, if I were perfect, I would know for sure that my camera were crap, I would know it wasn;t me, I would know what was wrong with it and I woudl have known to return it in the first 30 days.

however, I do not know the camera is crap,
I do not know why it is happening, and as the original question went even if I had returned it, ther eis a chance, the next one, or the fixed one would come back no different at all.
It could be the camera, it could be fixable, it could be the lense, it could be fixable,or it could be me, and could be fixable.

Irregardless, I came here to find out how to fix it.
2 easiest ways to fix it
either camera isn't working right
or I am not working right.

Just like the test for front/back focusing, it was an easy test.
just like the test for burnt pixels it was an easy test

The test for the focus, or why it is soft has not been that simple.

OK so let me try to help.

Have you tried reloading the firmware in this camera?

Probably won't help but worth a try.

Perhaps it is the silent wave motor in your lens either malfunctioning or not calibrated properly...maybe it is just a bad apple though but I doubt it.

Focus isn't going to have anything to do with the D5100 because it doesn't have a focus motor built in...the only time you are going to have focus issues is with the lens or the user.

Hey is blw Brian Sweeney?

Nevermind I see that it is not...

In case you are wondering Brian Sweeney is a great dude...he has like 25 Nikon F's and F2's and like 75 Nikkor lenses and about a hundred other cameras and lenses too.

He uses them too...when he is not shooting his Leica's and dozens of custom modified Jupiter lenses.

He does digital too! LOL

OK Cruch I assume this is you...I see your attitude is still the same...Here' the link to his stirring on another forum..

Discussion Forums @ Nikonians - D5100 back focusing!

Wow, are you a special kind of stupid? You are absolutly unable to accept the concept that there might be, 10+ other people in this world having the same problem I am having, either equipmt or operator caused?

Your stupidity os overwhelming. you might know something about photography you might even have a doctorate. But the reality is. wow, just wow.

This thread needs locking down - it's providing no positive contribution to the Nikonite community and is fast becoming space for a full on slang match!!!

see if it is a calibration issue or the afs mechanism by putting an old manual prime lens, or one that you can really control the focus manually, and see if the focus confirmation lines up with what your eye sees,

then,, put in in live view, and zoom into the spot that you and the camera think are in focus, and validate that it is pin sharp,

If not, then should be your actual focus sensors and their calibration, if sharp,, then it could be the lens instead.

I usuall D version lens, but the 5100 has to have G lens, so,, should be perfect,

I assume that test is on a tripod, cable or timer release, eliminate human shake.
