Soft edges on wide shots – Z6III + 14-30mm f/4

Hey everyone,

I’ve recently upgraded to the Z6III and have been pairing it with the Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 for landscape photography. I’m noticing something odd and hoping someone here has seen the same.

When shooting wide (especially between 14-18mm), I’m consistently getting soft corners and edges — even at f/8 to f/11, where I’d expect things to be nice and crisp. Center sharpness is fine, but the outer edges look smeared, almost like motion blur, even though I’m using a tripod and shutter speeds above 1/125s.

I’ve double-checked that I have distortion control and vignette control enabled, and I even tried fine-tuning the AF, but it’s a wide-angle lens and mostly relies on DOF, so I’m not sure that’s helping.

Could this be a lens calibration issue? Or does this combo just have known limitations? I’m wondering if anyone else has run into similar edge sharpness issues with this lens/body combo. Might consider switching to the 17-28mm f/2.8 if this persists, but I’d hate to do that if it’s something fixable.

Appreciate any thoughts or suggestions!

Your problems with this lens are consistent with the professional reviews.

Except for Ken Rockwell, but he is often more forgiving of faults in equipment. In his review he started out (blaming) listing any mistakes a user might make causing an unsharp photo, then saying this lens was perfectly good. Let's say I will disagree a bit.
