My first D, was a D70, then D90, then D7000, and finally bought a D7100 thinking 24MP should be wayyyyy much better than my ald ones.

So far 4 days. This is the first Nikon who disappoints me.

Blurry images
SUPER NOISY images

being trying to set it up correctly thinking i am doing something wrong with this one, but cant figured out.
I am Upset, Disappointed and Desperate, could this model be that bad?????
Hope NOT, and if ANY just one of you out there went thru something like this please let me know.
THANKS.

Hello, i shoot this ones this afternoon trying to get something sharp and nice. But please tell me how do you see them.
The first one
1/100, F1.8 ISO 800 50mm lens on a tripod

The 3rd one
1/1250 , f5.6 ISO 800 18-140 lens

And the 2nd one is a close up of the 3rd one.

This images were taken as RAW, and then Converted to DNG, and then JPGS. Not touching them at all.

The first image, (although not as sharp on my screen, possibly due to downsizing, happens to my images on this site all the time). The image taken at f1.8, so there'll be not a great amount of DOF, so much of the image will be blurred, apart from the focus point, which looks to be the flower. Also with a 50mm lens you're shooting at 1/100th on a tripod(?) You could go much much lower than that and lower the ISO accordingly
The second image. No f stop figure. Again that shutter speed is very high on the 18-140 for a still image, thats more very fast action territory

I agree with the people above my head. F/1.8 will give you a very narrow DOF and not much will be sharp. Besides, you said that these are converted from RAW files without any processing.
RAW files will always need sharpening. I have never met a RAW file thatr was sharp enough by itself.

Once you get used to how to shoot with the D7100 and apply some PP you'll be good to go.

Unless you plan of doing the proper post processing you would be better off shooting in JPEG Fine Large.

The first thing I always ask is "Have you fine tuned the Lenses yet?" the better the camera the more important doing that becomes. Make sure when you do it you do it correctly. Goggle it and follow the directions completely for the method you pick. This is not something to just play with. You will not hurt the camera by misadjustment since you can always just turn it off but you can make it look worse.

As far as shutter speed is concerned with the D7100 there is a great built in that handles that. In the Auto ISO section you can set the minimum shutter speed. Set it on AUTO and one more right click and you will be able to set the sensitivity. Set it on the default middle section. it looks at the length of the lens and where the zoom is and set the appropriate shutter speed. Set the ISO on 100 with a Max of where ever you are comfortable but generally ISO 800 does a pretty good job. You can play with that top number to suit what you like to shoot at. The shutter speed follows the "Reciprocal Rule" and does compensate for the camera being a DX camera. I used that all the time and it really does a great job.

You can use the camera with the VR on or off that is up to you but if you are on a tripod make sure the VR is turned OFF

I cant read a lot from those images, suffice to say i have moved from the D7000 to D7100 then the D7200 the D7100 is better than the D7000 but it may take time for you to notice this,i dont think for most images you would get that blown away impression but give it time and the benefits will start to show.

I would also skip the conversion to DNG and go straight to JPG from NEF if that's your workflow. If not intending to do post processing on the RAW, then I'm with Don that just shooting JPG in camera will give you the best SOOC image for your needs.

I got my D7100 from Santa Claus and am still learning and reading up on it.

So far I think it is a brilliant camera, I love it. Keep going with it and learning, I am sure that it will soon be your best friend.

The D7100 is much more demanding due in part to the sensor(24 mp) and the lack of an AA filter. More noise will come in early, ISO 400ish but will be better controlled at higher ISO than your previous camera's.
Your 50mm f1.8D lens is a fantastic lens. The get the best from the D7100, the focus will need to be exact. Once you get used to how the D7100 handles with your current lenses, you'll be amazed at what it can produce.
