Agreed about the hands, I'm not overly excited about them either. I don't like the loss of right arm detail and the fingers creeping up out of nowhere on the leg. Nice find! That's one of my issues with this shot also. Colored gel...nice. Never thought of that!

With regards to lighting, one of the best things you can study is called Inverse Square Law, which is how lighting falls off according to the source distance to subject. It's boring to read, and difficult to understand because it's techie. Find a still subject and experiment by moving your light around the room, and it all becomes crystal clear.

Another is to learn about how different modifiers affect the hard or softness of light. An umbrella is typically a softer light. The flash bounces all around in the umbrella and kind of gently washes over the whole area. A softbox is a medium light source. It's more directional than an umbrella, but is still a good quality of light. A grid is hard light because it's very directional. All 3 of these modifiers can come harder or softer based on the above Inverse Square Law and their distance to the subject.

I have my lighting down.
My point was that I prefer an edgy look.
I shoot plenty of soft even light portraits.
So I know where you are coming from.
It's not wrong if it is on purpose.

Ah, gotcha. I totally read your post wrong. That's my bad.

Guess I was still a bit punchy after dealing with Captain One-Star's butthurt yesterday.

I believe you are the one that is Butt-hurt...You put a pic up to be torn apart, and was really hoping to hear how awesome it was. Well guess what, the pic was very amateurish...Pose was stiff, no life in the eyes, no light in the eyes, composition was off,and it did not tell a story. I could go on and on. Like I said before I was trying to give you some tips to help. Instead you got all defensive and made excuses and a half-ass attempt to say it was done on purpose.
Get-a-grip...It was not a strong picture at all. Move on and learn from your mistakes.(Ps...Poor lighting does not equal dramatic)

I can feel your anger. The dark side is strong with you.

PURPOSE:
This shot was mostly just a test of the 60" umbrella in a daylight shooting situation. Model is my stepson, Luke, who is very camera shy. If he looks at the lens, he gets this "deer in the highlights" look, so I have him looking off-camera.

You've been off the rails for the duration of this thread, for no other reason than a basic lack of reading comprehension. That's a fact you continue to demonstrate at every opportunity.

Please, tell me more about your oranges.

Thank you, once again. Your contributions to this thread have been incredibly insightful! I actually have OneNote open in another window so that I can jot down all of this amazing advice.
