Hello everyone,
Very new to the D5100 and photography in general, I've made a error in buying an extra lens on ebay, it's an Sigma EX 50mm F/2.8 DG Macro (1:1) Lens for Nikon AF D fit, I can use this on the D5100 as a manual focus lens but I don't want to damage the D5100. I have asked a friend to try this lens on a D7000 to see if the AF bodied camera would work with it, his D7000 wouldn't even switch on and the lens just locked up!
I'd just like to ask if anyone has had this problem with the Sigma EX 50mm F/2.8 DG Macro or is this a really common problem with Sigma's. The lens is in very good condition I've email the previous owner and he mentioned it worked perfectly on his D300.
Any advise would be very much appreciated.

Why would you think that manual focusing a lens would damage your 5100?
I use a Nikon 50mm D lens with my 3100 with no problems.

3x00 and 5x00 plus whats Dx0 models didn't have AF motor can use ANY Nikon F mount lenses period. These bodies don't have a metering lever that you'd normally need an AI conversion for (in some cases), so everything and anything fits.

Thanks for the quick reply SkvLTD & Blacktop, I was thinking that the result from putting the lens on the D7000 (not switching on and the lens locking up) would either damage the D7000 or the D5100, but as you have both mentioned that the lenses with the Nikon F mount will fit, I'm pleased to hear that. It's still a mystery why the D7000 behaved like this, I have read somewhere that the lens may need to be re-chipped to use on the D7000!
