Sigma APO Macro Super

Hi,

I've picked up cheap Sigma lens and can't find a review of it. It is a Sigma Macro Super with a gold front ring. I've found reviews of versions with a red ring or no ring at all but no gold ring.

I only want to use it as a spare lightweight carry around lens and it takes decent images.

I'm just curious as to how it reviewed when new.

Thanks
Nick

And it has internal focus motor. Hmmmmm. Might consider this guy over Nikon 70-300 for the price and... macro-ness.

Maybe I will. I've not used it enough yet. First impressions are that it's images are fine but I doubt it will survive a drop or a bang.

For £40 it seemed too good to refuse, so my expectations weren't high. Pleasantly surprised I have to say.

I need to point out one thing. Macro (true 1:1) lenses are fixed focal length. Zoom's may say macro but probably will only get you a 1:2 or 1:3 ratio.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that's a bad lens, but a lot of manufacturers are now saying macro when it truely is not.
That being said, I'll probably get a lot of corrections from those here who are smarter than me (almost all of you). I'm quoting this article from Acorama's buying guide.

You're quite right but not too bothered about Macro really as I have a 55mm Micro for close up.

I really just needed to have a lens that I could leave in the car or my backpack for general use. As it was cheap it didn't matter if it got a but worn and scuffed.

I'm just trying to find a real budget with 300 top end for some wildlife and sports and whatnot where I absolutely need to have as much reach as possible.

It certainly fits those parameters. If you are on an APS C sensor it will be 450mm at the top end.

It's a nice lens that takes a very good quality image but won't take a physical beating very well.
