yes, i owned one a few years back.it was rather heavy and suffered badly from lens creep. after the lens crept to its maximum it was difficult to retract. i had to disengage AF to do so.optically it was unremarkable. i soon realised that i was much better off using my nikon 70-300vr and cropping if i needed extra reach.on the positive side i have heard that it makes a good door stop.

Apart from being difficult to retract mine was the same,in fact i still have it somewhere :D your 55-300 will out perform it even with a crop,shame because it was a nice range and they are cheap now on ebay,if you are really on a tight budget the 120-400 goes cheap some times,nowhere near the sharpest tack in the box but streets ahead of that one.
