Sigma 70-300 DG or DG APO

I have a Nikon D5100 and attended an air show today not expecting much with the standard 18-105mm lens. Images were not that bad which made me think as show is also on tomorrow with a better lens I could get some better pictures....!

There are no local indie camera shops anymore in Swansea but Currys is selling the Sigma 70-300mm lens in the standard DG and then DG APO. Their prices are actually on a par with Amazon UK ,more or less.

So for £50 more is the APO lens worth the money? From what I have read it simply helps with minimising chromatic aberration? Not having heard of this before have read up on it, and perhaps the diff in money is worth it.

Also overall does anyone have any thoughts on these sigma lens bearing in mind the more expensive is only £150 in UK at moment.

Thanks for advice and link. Just noticed that the APO lens isn't available for collection in store so in a bit of a quandary now. You also mention neither are perfect (and for the price I guess that's to be expected) but have you used both? I note you have the 120-400 sigma lens. As stated I am only a beginner and budgets are tight but not in habit of spending for sake of it if lens isn't going to perform.
Reviews on amazon are very good but I note are quite historical lol!

Never owned the none apo but going by the limitations quality wise of the apo i wouldn't expect it to be brilliant,after saying that i do believe the best lens to get is the one you can afford,have you checked argos they may have it.

You would be much better with the Tamron or Nikon 70-300's - the Sigma is a noticeably poor cousin to both by all accounts (I've done a lot of research last 2 months). The Tamron is considered marginally sharper at the full 300 and cheaper than the Nikon too. :)

I went through the same research process and purchased the Tamron SP AF 70-300 f/4-5.6 DI VC. After rebate it was $349 (£231).
