Busy at work and home, bad combination. Last 3 weekends been working on remodeling the bathroom, couple more weekends should be done. That 135 would be sweet! I'm amazed they haven't come out with it yet, 135 was my favorite tele in the film days!

If it's sharper than the Nikon 1.4 (which isn't hard unfortunately) and has great bokeh, it'll be worth the price. I'm on the fence, 50mm is just not an exciting focal length to me.

Exactly Rick. thats why I think the nikon offereings are more than fine. its just a 50mm. the 50 is now the new 35 or 85? no its just a must have focal lentgth. the sigma, performance wise looks very capable (although the test was done by sigma so I dont trust it 100%) but anything over $600 and I think its just not logical. a nikkor 50 1.4g costs $400 and they want $800. no thank you. I dont care to buy the sigma 135. Im just waiting for others to drop their 135 DC so I can pick that up. DOF on 135 and f/2 is more than enough. no need for 1.8. since I shoot open rarely 1.8 is not necessary. im more curious in the 24-70 f/2 OS. because every 24/28-70 theyve put out was soft and lacked contrast and sharpness.

Sounds like a lot, but I haven't seen any images from it yet. If it's not much better then a 1.8G or D I don't think Nikon has anything to worry about.

by the one (pathetic) picture I saw that sigma did, its very capable and bettering the zeiss. wow, thatll be 3 lenses that sigma did thats a worthy lens. where the hell were they till now? they were selling crap till now. and thats years and thousands of lenses.

WTF..Sigma removed the $790 price and said they are goin to officially announce the price on April 11th..

anything more than $600 and im out. ill get the nikkor 1.8g and a 1.4D

the current sigma 50 is better than the nikkors 1.8/1.4g. focus sucks A though. and they sell that for less than the nikkor 1.4g. so $600 is the right price for the new 50. it has more elements (its glass not gold) and its sharper. hearsay on the AF accuracy. but its a sigma. so another $200 over the old 50 is very fair and logical. $400 over the old one is just a ripoff any way you look at it.

The 35 art is sharper than nikon and canons version and they sell it cheaper. Dont see the logic here.

There seems to be an understatement that says you always get what you pay for. For some companies, it's just a way to say that their product is better than others and to bring their image up the scale. And, let's not forget, doing so they can increase their profit margins. And don't forget these companies are not there to please the consumers, but to make profits to their shareholders.

There will be many that buy it but many pros i spoke to said they wouldnt pay a grand for a 50 1.4. Let alone a sigma lens. No matter how much better it may be. Im not paying twice as as much for a sigma over nikon. Its just a meh 50mm In my eyes.

I understand and agree 100% with you. But maybe they want to go after the Zeiss crowd who is more than ready to spend a fortune for some IQ increase, but also for the image that shooting with these lenses bring them.

The more I examine my lens inventory, and look at what I actually shoot, the more I become a minimalist. I shoot between 18-35 and 70-200 Fx. My needs (lol, wants) are both wider and longer. Unless I get in the people business, I may never have anything in the middle. I think I need a 24-70, but whenever I have had anything 35-70 in my arsenal, I rarely used it. I want a 24-70 for just in case, but a dedicated 50mm just doesn't do anything exciting in my opinion. I'm gonna pass on this one.

I can not imagine it would be so much better than the Nikon 50.s to justify the price. I think they are just trying to appeal to the artsy crowd and part them from their dinero.

Today the 50mm market spans an extremely wide price range. At one end is the Nikon 50mm F1.8d selling for USD 100. At the other end is the Leica 50mm range finder lense selling for USD 7,500/. The Zeiss Otus is in between at USD 4,000.

In order to understand why people buy the expensive lenses when a dirt cheap one is available, you have to understand what the lense does. Here is what people who pay big dollars look for
. Sharpness
. Microcontrast
. Lense rendering
. Out of focus rendering - bokeh
. Mechanical construction
. Ease of focusing

In short how does the image look when shot with this lense. For some 90% perfection does it. That may be either due to their own criteria or due to the fact that that is what sells. Achieving the last 10% does not bring them more money. For others the rendering and the sharpness/microcontrast makes their day. Either aesthetically or commercially that is what they want.

What I have noticed is that today most of the lenses; at least from reputed manufacturers; fall in the 90% bracket. And that is where more than 99% of buyers are congregating. But there is always a market for perfectionists, who are willing to pay for that iota of improvement, even though it may cost them five to ten times more.

The Zeiss Otus is still on my wishlist. Sigma had been putting the character of an APO lens loosely with their line-up. I have the Sigma 85mm f1.4 and love it a lot.

Just let the consumers to decide if they are going to get these lenses or not.
