Anybody purchased one of the "cheap" shutter release cables from eBay? They sell from less than a fiver which seems a bit to good to be true. I would be interested to hear your thoughts and opinions.

Thanks

So what? Third party wireless shutter release (replica of ML L3) costed me 7$, while the original is ~21$. Battery grip (replica) for D7000, made by Aputure costs 40$ while the original goes for 200$... And do they work? Yes, they are all quite usable... How do I know? I use them...

I think they should work out fine. You might have a slightly higher chance of a faulty connector or something odd that doesn't work correctly. Just make sure there's some type of replacement program in place with the buyer.

I just wait until I can get a manufacturer's model cheaply on ebay. I just got a Nikon MC-30 for my D700 for $12 total. More than $5, but I'll take my lunch to work with me one day to pay for the difference!

You know what - as for flash units or lenses, or filters, where sometimes you do not exactly have to obtain an "original" SB or Nikkor or Nikon, but a Mitsumi or Hama or Tokina or Yongnuo will do, I think, a trivial pieces of equipment such as these cables are even less prone to cause problems... Even I (being an amateur electro-technician/hobbyist) am capable of assembling things like cable adapters, remote controllers etc. on a "do it yourself/kit" basis, using simple tools like a soldering iron and a multi-meter...

I use a cable release that cost me $5 about 4 years ago. Works flawlessly. Nikon model cables cost more because it says Nikon on them. :)
