When I open a raw image in view nx it is at the very top, looks like: DSC_ (image #)

I experienced something unusual the other day. I used a card reader to import the photos, and they imported as usual by numbering them as 001, 002, etc. When I decided to import them again, the card reader wouldn't transfer them a second time so I moved the folder from the memory card to the computer. In doing so, the number sequence no longer was 001, 002 but was instead the DSC_image# that you mentioned.

Isn't that just the image name? It increments but is only an accurate actuation number if the increments were set at shot one, and you have taken less than 1000 shots!

Also, bear in mind that switching to live view counts as an actuation.
