Should I upgrade to a new camera?

Besides just being an great camera all around it is also weather sealed. That is one of the things I was interested in when I upgraded. There were many times I would not carry my camera out with me because it might rain and I was afraid of getting my camera wet. Now I don't worry about getting rained on near as much.

If I am out with my 5300 and it rains it fits snugly in my all weather protector no problem...:)

These are all excellent responses, but now I'm between D7100, D5300, or just new glass for my D5100.
However the scales are tipping towards the D7100 with the 18-140.
No matter what, it's going to be a GREAT Christmas in my house!!

What will you name your new D7100?

Looks like you've received some very good advice. But the real answer comes from the Magic 8 Ball. It says, "without a doubt."

The Beast isn't a name? Au Contrair, mon frere!

And since my D7100, being the PRIMAL one with that very name... that would make ME the beauty! ;)

I'm gonna toss a red herring into the mix:

Forget the cameras and forget the lenses. You started this thread with a question about an upgrade, and you've gotten some swell advice from a bunch of people on the internet who are willing to spend your money. And now, from the quote above, you're even more undecided than when you started this thread.

My opinion is, you're bored with your camera. More specifically and accurate, you're probably bored with what you have to take photographs of. If you've got the budget to blow a grand on your photography hobby, let me offer you the best solution possible: spend that money on something other than new gear.

Take a photography workshop. All over the country, there are pros giving workshops on every topic under the sun. Some big name guys, too. Spending a few days at a workshop will do more for you than any piece of gear will.

Not bored at all. Do I need a new one? Nope. Do I want a new one? Yes.
Just starting to get involved working with an area pro. Really looking forward to this.

You're absolutely correct about getting good advice. Every post has helped.

Thanks for the input!

LOL, Roy.

It will be for Christmas. I spend a lot of time in NYC, so I'll just have to get over to B&H.
It would kill me to order and then have to wait for delivery.

Well before you drop your chunk o' change on that D7100... I'll play devil's advocate one more time and ask the more important question.

Besides owning a D5100... what lenses do you own that go with it? While getting a new body with "New bells and whistles" may seem extremely tempting, it just will not make you a better photographer. With all of the mindset that it may be the better purchase, do keep in mind that if you play on the "latest and greatest" you will always be playing that ill game of catch up.
The D5100 is not a slouch of a camera at all, and with better glass I'm very sure that it can play with the best of them. However if you say, you own a kit lens and maybe the 55-200 lens, and maybe that important 35mm F1.8 and that would be all to your gear bag... Then I would say your money would be better spent on better glass. Glass and the little rubbery thing behind it is what makes the shot. Not the camera. Unless you find that the camera is lacking in the photos that you take, is when you should replace/upgrade, as while you may think it would be that much better, if you still end up owning kit lenses you really gain nothing and are traveling sideways and not ahead.

Before you upgrade to a new camera, I think you or anyone else for that matter, must ask themselves, and answer honestly and truthfully, why do I need to upgrade my gear? Ask yourself if the camera you are using now is actually preventing you from doing some things you want to do because it lacks that feature (whatever it is). Or does it have 160,000, instead of a pretty paltry 16,000 actuations on it. If you can honestly answer no to the questions, then you would be better putting that money toward another lens that might give you more optical reach or field of view, or some self improvement books/videos or courses. So many people think they could just take better pictures if they just had a better camera and most of the time it turns out that they plunk down a bunch of money for a camera with all the fancy bells and whistles on it and they STILL take crappy pictures. In the majority of the cases, the real reason a person is taking crappy pictures has A LOT more to do with the photographer than with the equipment. This may not be what you want to hear but it is something that is worth considering before plunking down money on more equipment.

I sold my D300 to get a D7100. I tell you what I gained. Yesterday I was shooting some stuff around the house at ISO 1600, and forgot all about it.
This morning I went out to take some pics for the weekly challenge (please join us, it's lots of fun), and never even bothered to check the ISO setting. (I get absent minded sometimes in my old age).

I had a really great morning shooting. I was in the zone with my composition and the subject matter. Just a great feel taking shots.
When I got home and loaded it all into LR, I realized that I shot everything at 1600. I couldn't believe that I forgot to check before I started shooting. I was sure that the morning would be a total waste. Well, to my surprise the shots came out really well even without much NR after the fact.
If this was my D300, I would have deleted most of my shots.
