Shooting whales!!

We are visiting Monterey in a few weeks and plan to take a whale watching trip to see humpbacks. Has anybody done a similar trip and if so what lenses did you use? I'm thinking 70-200 on the 7100 for reach and 24-120 on the 800 if they come close.

Any other tips for shooting whales.

There is a US ruling that the whale watching boats must stay at least 100 yards away. Whales might pop up closer, but don't count on it.

You will want a longer lens. 300mm is not bad on DX.

Here are a couple DX with 200mm and a 1.7x extender - and cropped substantially.

I had the 80-200mm on the D300...Sometimes the whales were almost under the boat....

I took a few nice shots...Would have loved one breaching close by but it didn't happen..

I doubt if I will go longer than 200 although we'll have a 2x and 1.4x in the bag if needed. I was actually more worried about not getting wide enough with the 70-200, especially on the 7100.
