I wish we had some local repair shops that I could turn too. It would open things up a bit, but we do have a good local Nikon dealer that has a good reputation.

Okay everyone, there has been a change! I just found out that my step dad will be giving me his D5100 as he just got a D7200 a month or two ago. What does everyone think of the D5100? I know it's probably quite a step down from the 7100, but still pretty good camera right?!

Im thinking that will do me good for quite a while, and maybe I'll try to sell or trade my d40 and then get the 7100 or 7200?

Definitely going to be a improvement. I use this site to compare dslrs Specifications - Nikon D5100 vs Nikon D40

Plenty of good deals are out there in a variety of good cameras. If you are patient and closely watch the Usual Suspects/online retailers, you can find some bargains that will put the right camera in your hand and save you some money along the way. I was fortunate to find good buys on both the D5500 and the D7200 in recent months and am glad that I wasn't in such a hurry that I tried to force a purchase.

The D5100 is a good little nikon and I had one a while back. Don took some awesome shots with his.
But the D7100 or D7200 are quite a bit better, with built in focus motor, so they will auto focus with the af-d nikkor lenses. I would consider saving a bit to buy a D7100 over the D5100 if you can. Just my 2¢.:)

I own a D722 and impressed with it. Among other things, the doggone thing is rugged; it feels substantial in the hand. In addition, some excellent deals are available for refurbished models, and I can't see a downside at all to buying refurbished. Happy hunting.
