SD Card issue

Possibly a strange question to ask, and apologies if this is not the right place, but I have an issue with my SD card that I don't understand.......

When viewing photos on my N5100 each shot appears just once. However, when I connect it to the PC, each image is there twice. They are both jpg's, so it's not as if I have set the camera to take JPG+RAW.

No real harm done (apart from using up my memory card storage quicker!), but I just wondered if anyone had ever had a similar issue...........?

What are you using to see the duplicate pictures? Windows explorer or some viewing/editing/organizer software? Using windows explorer, are there still two files? what are the exact names (with file extension) of one pair of duplicates? Windows won't allow the same exact name in the same folder, so this could be a good clue to what is going on. Or just try formating the card in camera and see it it still happens.

Viewed in Windows explorer.

Most files are duplicate names with the second file have number in brackets....e.g. fileone.jpg & fileone (2).jpg.....

Ok. and these are on the card itself? Or at a destination on your hard drive? if on the card, I would definitely format it in camera. I can't think of an option that would create 2 files. Did you do any edits in camera? That might make a second file, not sure offhand.

Yes, on the card itself.

I don't think I did any in-camera editing. Certainly not on the number of images that it's happened on....

Thanks for the reply...

Try it after formating in-camera. If it still makes the duplicates, maybe a reset to factory settings is the way to go.
Are the file times the same? If they are the same I would think it happened for sure in-camera. Try the format, maybe the reset if you don't mind losing all your settings.

If the file times are different, then something on your pc might be misbehaving and copying images back to the card. maybe an automatic import whose destination is the card itself. Just a wild guess there. You could also try locking the sd card before inserting in your pc.

Are the photos identicle? Meaning yes you see the file number with (2) in quotations. But that might only mean you have two photos sharing the same file number. Happened to me all the time untill I turned on file sequence in camera.

Yes, identical images.

Maybe just a 'dodgy' memory card?

I don't know if you already know this, but you should ALWAYS format your memory card in camera!

Look in your Custom Settings Display/Shooting Display/File No. Sequence. A good place to start investigating. Oh, and check your manual for a solution to this problem. There just might be some explanation in there.

It doesn't sound likely that it would be a bad card. Something is writing the same file name twice to the card for those numbered ()'s to be there. That's way too organized to be a bad card. It's either happening in camera or pc. Check the file creation times or try locking the card before connecting to pc to figure out exactly when its happening. Start with formating the card in camera before you try anything though.
