So, any quick tips for lightening shots? Those are definitely on the bucket list, but I'm actually baffled as to how to snap em successfully aside from sitting steady and being trigger happy....

Well before I got my lightning trigger I would use bulb setting and a tripod, then wait for a flash (like a uncontrollable speedlight). When there is a nice lightning flash I would reset and go again, I use ISO 100 and aperture anywhere from f/2.8 - f/11 depending on the scene. With a lightning trigger it is much easier to get the camera to fire and you can relax a bit, I normally use 5sec to 30sec, but with longer shutter speeds you will get double clouds etc with each new flash of lightning. Again aperture is anywhere from f/2.8-f/11. Also use manual focus and focus on a star either in the viewfinder or in live view mode zoomed in. And if your lens has VR remember to turn it off ;)

Photo of work. Pity I only have my Samsung S4. Taken in HDR mode.

Cheers guys, I think storm season is nearly over.

It's not over, it's just moving to Oklahoma. Hoping the inspiration from your storm photos will help me catch some decent shots, but afraid this non-sealed D3100 won't see a WHOLE lot of action...

Mind if I ask what lightning trigger you use, without forcing me to dig back through the threads? As you can tell from my barrage of likes today, I sometimes have to batch process to catch up. ;)

I am using the Nero lightning trigger, I know some do not like the design of it but I am quite impressed with it.

I bought one of those cheap eBay jobs. Was about $20. Haven't had a chance to use it yet (no summer storms here this year, they all went round) but have tested it and it is VERY sensitive to light change so is going to work well I think. Just wish we'd get a good storm :(
