Re: Scott's Australian Walkabout
Cyclones do tend to decrease in strength when they cross the coast and travel overland. By how much depends on a few things but how strong the winds are to start with is a biggy. Depends too on the size of the system. The one crossing up near Scott will be Cat 4 (225-380k/hr winds), travelling over flatish land so will maintain a fair bit of it's intensity. Scott lives in remote Australia abt 4hrs from the nearest big town, so loss of power etc all takes more effort to fix and flooding up there hangs around for longer.
The one coming across the coast in Qld (as Cat 2, so 125-165k/hr winds) will travel south over the land to where I live about 650km south and still be pushing about 90k/hr winds. After the predicted 400-500mm rain on already saturated land, for us it will mean trees down, flash flooding and probable landslides (I live in hill country), but I'm not exactly remote at only 1hr from the nearest major centre.
If the storm tracks right over your area, will it maintain any significant wind or just dump heavy rain?
and
Do y'all have cyclone parties?
