I had a heart stopping experience the other day, after the quick morning shoot of the motor bikes I was getting my camera gear out of the car. My D800e had the 70-200 f2.8 on it. As always I grabbed it by the tripod collar which was on top of the lens as this is where I place it when shooting bikes etc, the tripod leg on the 70-200 is in two pieces and comes apart with a clip, well I accidentally released the clip and the camera and lens fell to the concrete driveway, I quickly put my foot to stop it but not in time. I managed to step on the strap and that stopped the camera and lens bouncing, on inspection I was glad to see only a few scratches on the L bracket and a scratch on the lens hood, all focusing and camera dials still work correctly. Lets just say that I will be keeping an eye on and ensuring the locking nut on the tripod leg is always tight.

That must have given you an awful fright Scott :grief:.

I have only dropped an old lens that cost me a hundred bucks and that was bad enough.

Accidents happen to easily :( Glad it's OK :D

My worst nightmare. Hope the camera and lens are OK.

That was lucky for you - and us.

Glad to hear that story had a good ending.

Thanks everyone.

On a bright note my new car is on a truck heading to me :)

Did you remember to pack the camera in the bag Scott ?

Cheers guys and yes I remembered to pack my D800e with 70-200 and 50mm plus lightning trigger as there are storms around haha. I also packed my AW1 and SB900 so I should be covered for all circumstances. Just touching it out now trying to drink an ice cold beer. By the way my camera is around 11kg and my clothes bag is 6kg haha.

;) I knew you wouldn't forget Scott, lots of other things would get left behind before the camera. :D

Sounds like you got the weight ratio about right.
I travelled for 7 months around europe and asia in my younger days with a backpack about the same size as the camera bag I have now, and back then I had a Nikon SLR and a couple of lenses and a light tripod.
After that trip, whenever I went back to Asia, I only took the clothes I was wearing, and a virtually empty backpack, I just bought things as I needed them, and usually threw them away ( or gave away ) if the backpack got too heavy.
I might need a bigger bag now though, as I probably couldn't do it as rough as I did back then .

These beers are going down nicely. Hopefully we have another empty plane so I can sleep.
