Scanners and "The train Paparazzi"

I think it was mentioned some time ago on our Nikonites rail photo forums, but the topic of safety bears repeating, especially for newcomers that have since become interested in train photography.

Railroads are a hazardous environment to shoot photos in, so always be aware and never put yourself at risk for a shot. Expect a train on any track in any direction at any time. Modern mainline trains are hauled by quiet locomotives moving on welded rail -- they can be on top of you in an instant with no warning. Never step on the rail. This is strictly forbidden in railroad rulebooks, as it risks a falling injury or a sprain. Stay off of bridges and away from tunnel interiors -- both are highly dangerous places to be. Never climb on or cross over equipment. If it moves, the slack action will throw you, resulting in serious injury or death if you fall on the rail.

Remember that you're on private property at times. Be respectful, be smart, stay safe and stay alive..
