I started working with my flash last night for the first time. I have used it but not gotten into the meat of the subject. I did a flash fill in bright sun with half the face in sun and half shade and was pretty pleased with the results. Which flash are you using?

Right now, just the pop up flash. I don't really even understand that, let alone get an external one.

Rescued this little guy from the bird netting over our chicken coop yard. His brother/sister didn't quite make it. :(

Can anyone identify this little guy? There's a barn swallow nest in the barn, right over the the chicken coop yard. He kinda sorta looks like a tiny one. Wondering if they fell out of the nest. Or they flew in from somewhere else... He hobbles around the ground like his wing is broken, but it is not. Neither is his legs. So he's either too young to fly, or too tired to fly.

He's wet, we gave it a bath. No soap, we didn't have any dawn. You can see the cooties on him, and me, in the first pic.

I burned my clothes, and took a bath in gasoline. I feel much better now.

He's going to spend the night in a cat carrier in the chicken coop. But on the other side of the fence. Our chicken coop is half coop, half shed. We'll see how he's doing in the morning. Can't find any mom or dad screaming for him anywhere.

Nothing is wrong with the bird pictures. No flash was used. These were taken after I was done playing with the flash. My daughter took the photo of the one with it on my arm. That was interesting talking her how to set the settings...

He must be referring to the fact that when you view the images you are only seeing half of them, at least I am too on my laptop. In most images it looks like the bird is half out of the frame. When you click on them, then you can see the entire image and the entire bird.

I saw this while using the new skin on the phone, just thought it had something to do with that, but not seeing the pics on my laptop until you open them.

Day 178

I don't know what I was going for, but I remember standing in the barn taking pictures then deleting pictures. Here's one I didn't delete!

Just working with the flash.

Here's what you get today.

Exciting, huh?

Very exciting. Which flash? I have had my SB-700 Speedlight for a while and had only put it on maybe once of twice. Recently I have started to play with all the modes and figure it all out. It is an amazing piece of tech and really pretty easy to use in the on-camera mode. fill in looks like it is the default and that works great in the bounce mode.

Try and get a little more of the car next time.

Day 179

I do remember what I was going for here! I was trying to get the tree blowing in the crazy wind. It didn't work out though. I think I should have sped up the shutter speed a bit so it just showed the branches swaying in one direction, not both. Just looks blurry. Ah well, I'm sure we'll have another storm any minute now!

That's a tough one. I've tried it numerous times and have never been successful. It always looks like it's either out of focus or I moved while taking the photo. :(

Just the pop-up flash. I am looking at the SB-910 though.

I'm going with my wife to the Dominican Republic next February with the Midwest Medical Mission group. They go and see about a thousand patients and do about 200 surgeries in about 4 days. (It's a ten day trip... They're really not fooling me on the real reason they go. LOL!) Anyway, my official function will be Hospital Building/Medical Equipment fixer upper during the day, and the official photographer in the day/evening/night.

I've seen lots of photos people have taken down there with their cell phones. They all have one thing in common, they need more light! So I figured I better start figuring out the flash stuff. I'll probably only have 3 months to play and figure out the SB-whatever I get. Just trying to get some basics down first...

I didn't include any more of the car, because I just changed that shock you see on my daughters car, so that was the subject. :p

A few days ago my daughter told me her car was making a funny noise in the back when she hit a bump. I went out and pushed down on the back of the car... I think it bounced up and down by itself for 20 minutes! Found one of her shocks in two pieces. Nice...

Well... I had it on the tripod, so that was a plus. I think next time the crazy wind shows up, I'll just move the shutter speed for each photo I take and change the aperture as needed. See what happens. I know it can be done, I've seen them before!

Day 179 (Bonus photos!)

So, I've seen these bunnies a hundred times over the last week or so. Of course, where's the camera? In the house. So this time I grabbed the camera, put it in quiet mode, walked outside and shot 51 photos. It took about 8 minutes total. I got about 15 feet from them before my son came running outside to see what I was doing.
