Day 149

Well I was going for a train shot, but no trains showed up! So, I walked 3/4 miles down the track, and 3/4 back.

...and if you happen to know what this shunt is for or what it does, let me know! The tracks are up on a man made hill about 8 or 9 feet up. This was at the bottom of the hill, about 1/4 mile from a crossing. I picked it up, as I thought it'd make an awesome geocache container, but found wires attached to it. I pulled on it a little, there was no end in sight to the wires as they just went in the ground.

Of course no trip to the train tracks is complete without checking on my buddy to see how he's doing.

Day 150

I have figured out that if I want all the trains to stop, all I have to do is walk out to the tracks to take a picture of a train. They'll all stop...

Still waiting though.

That's a habit I'd break myself of real quickly.

Why?

First of all, if I don't know what a device is and it has wires in it, I assume it is not there for me to bother. If it was placed there by the railroad and I disturb it, it may not do its job properly. I would have left it alone.

Second, how did you know that this wasn't a bomb?

Well, firstly, when I walked up to it, it wasn't a device, it was a pvc tube. I did not see the wires, and the label you see was face down.

Secondly, it's technically on my property, not the railroads property. There's a ton of junk on this line. From pairs of boots, mustard packets, coke cans, underwear, hats, barrels, steel beams, railroad ties, pipes, canisters, clothes pins, railroad spikes, water valves, etc... If I need something strangely specific, I go out there before I go to the store. It's usually out there. I'm waiting for one of those new tractors I see on the trains all the time to fall off.

Thirdly, I know it's not a bomb, because that type of paranoia has not made it out here in the middle of nowhere yet. If I raised the camera angle slightly, you'd see about 80 acres of nothing. Not a big priority on anybody's hit-list. Had I seen that tube in the city next to a track, I would've had the bomb squad out there in short order.

If it was a bomb, I'd be dead, and you'd never know about it.

Well, there you have it.

Day 153

Busted out the 40ish year old rototiller. Checked the oil, put some gas in it.

Started on the first pull! I love this thing!

Still has the original spark plug!

Ok, off to 'till that field in the background!

Ok, not really...

I did do this though!

I was going to go start the vineyard, but the ground was a little bit too wet to get into anything that big.
Maybe Tuesday or Wednesday if it doesn't rain anymore. At least my wife can start planting tomorrow!
