Repair choices

My 70-200 2.8 VRII has developed a focusing fault, and I'd like to have someone look at it.

I'm curious if I have any choices I should consider over just sending it to Nikon, as Nikon can get quite expensive.

I realize this is a very expensive lens, so I'm not trying to cheap out, rather trying to determine if there are alternatives I should consider.

Also, can anyone comment on Nikon's turnaround time on something like this in recent history?

I've had two lenses repaired by Nikon USA in California. The turn-around time to have it shipped from Japan, get it repaired and sent back to me is about a month. It could be faster or longer depending on the parts availability.

Other authorized Nikon service centers might not have all the right parts or tools to perform the job which "may" cause delay. The average price is around $350.

I sent my lens to Nikon in NY, they repaired it and had it back in my hands in 7 days.

2 of those days were a weekend, and 4 of those days, it was being shipped.

So, that means they repaired it within a day.

I provided my receipt from where I purchased it, along with the warranty card, and the repair was covered under warranty.

It is back, they did a nice job, and it looks like new.

They replaced the lens mount, adjusted the auto focus operation, and gave it a general check and clean.

I'm quite pleased with the experience.
