Dunno, I've shot with a 24-85 VR and I think it is killer. I'd buy one at the right price in a second.

Not a snob lens but takes great pics as you have proven here!

Well illustrated point!

I'd say 85% of my, work work, is with this guy and even at $300 it can make that back, if not more, to you in one assignment. Definitely leaving you wanting more, but only if you frequent areas it lacks in like low light or a wider angle. Also seems a tad skittish with its weather proofing given an external zoom, but I haven't looked whether it has internal seals of sort or not (from all the play in its covers, I'd say it doesn't).

For night time flash work, it beats 24-70 with weight alone and shooting around 4-5.6 the sharpness becomes honestly marginal to my eye.

35-70 f/2.8 is and 28-75 f/3.5 are good too if you have a screw drive camera (I have the 24-85VR too it's a long story). The 24-85 VR does let you get away with really low shutter speeds at night. Both of these are even cheaper as well.

I use this lens occasionally when I want to travel light and find it OK for for posting to web sites and other social media. I think the 24-70 has better sharpness and color, which it should, costing 4x as much and having Nano coating. Going back to my early digital days, I got some very nice pics from the 18-70 DX, which was also an under-appreciated kit lens. But it didn't compare to the 17-55 2.8. Again, guess you get what you pay for.
