Remote Shutter Release Questions

Okay, I'm looking into a wireless remote shutter setup for my D700 (and probably will pick up the matching cable for my D3200). I'm looking at the Vello Shutterboss, and the Neweer NW-870DC0. Both seem to have similar feature sets, both use the same batteries (AAA and CR-2), and I imagine both have unintelligible manuals.

Questions:

Has anyone reading this used either of these kits?

Can they perform a custom timed release, or just Bulb with a time elapsed indicator?

All else being equal, is the Vello worth 50% more? Both sets of reviews indicate some folks have had DOA's and short lifespans on units, which is probably par for the Chinese course.

If you wouldn't use these, what are your recommendations?

I use a pair of Vello Freewave Fusion remotes. The same basic unit will trigger any of my Nikons with the proper cable, as well as my Sony. The 2 units can be configured so they fire only from a specific trigger, or you can fire multiple cameras with a single remote, allowing me to do stuff like this...

With the camera in Constant mode and the trigger on Bulb you can spray from a distance, which works amazingly well for shots like this. Range is about 300 ft., so I set the camera on a tripod aimed at a hummingbird feeder, pour myself a drink, light a cigar, and pretend to be a photographer.

I really love mine. I have a wired Shutterboss for other things that works equally as well, but I much prefer the RF remotes.

And my apologies for not reading with comprehension - I missed the timed release. The one thing you can't get from the Freewave is a programmable timed release or intervals, you only have single, multi (which I never use), Bulb (used as described above) and a fixed timer (5 or 10 seconds - don't use that either). Honestly, for those functions I see little need for a wireless remote and use the wired if needed.

That said, both of the units you link are wired, not wireless, which is what you said you were looking for at the beginning. I see that the Neewer unit calls itself "wireless" but I see nothing that would serve as the remote trigger in any of the photos. I do see that they make a wireless Shutterboss for twice the price of the wired. For my money what I have (wired Shutterboss, 2 Freewaves) is money better spent since I like the ability to trigger multiple cameras and I don't know if the Shutterboss is configured in a way that I could get it to fire multiple cameras from a single base unit. Depending on your plans for using them you could get both a single wired and wireless for $10 more than the wireless Shutterboss, and expand to a second wireless if you ever wanted.

Hi Jake,

Both units are indeed wireless (I did omit the word wireless in the Vello description, though.) Both have a shoe-mount receiver, both can be used wired or wireless. Thanks for the info on the unit you are using, I'll check it out when I get off work, tonight.
