Remote Control Stuff

Tank you, very much!

I bought this about ten years ago, and just within the last few weeks, I got it into my head to get it out, and perform some much-needed maintenance and repairs on it, including building it a new battery pack out of a bunch of old AA-sized NiMh cells I had sitting around. I now think the original battery pack was defective from the beginning, as it performs far better and longer with the new one than it ever did with the original one.

The main gun is a working Airsoft gun. The turret rotates, and the gun elevates.

Today, I got it in my head to take it out and try to get some good pictures of it.

I suppose a project for the near future will be doing much of the same with my one other R/C toy, a model submarine, which is also in need of some maintenance.

When I saw this in a hobby/craft store some time in 2003 or 2004, I thought it looked like something I'd want, but not nearly enough to pay $305.99 for it. I guess that's the tragedy of this toy, was that it was a really cool toy, but just cost too much to manufacture, for them to be able to profitably sell it at any price that anyone would pay for it. I don't think they made very many, and they discontinued it.

On a return to the shop some time later, I saw that the price had been dropped to $229.99—still more than I'd pay for it, and I guess still more than anyone else was willing to pay for it.

On some later visit to that store, I found that desperate to sell it, they'd dropped the price to $50. At that price, I bought it.

Having just made some major repairs to it, here's my submarine being tested in the bathtub. No room to maneuver, but at least I can test the basic function of it. Tomorrow, I'll have to take it to the pool and put it through its paces.

For the first time, ever, I ran it in a pond, rather than a bathtub or a swimming pool.

For the current weekly challenge, I wanted a picture of it in a setting that was not quite so obviously artificial. I wouldn't normally run it in such a pond, because of the risk of losing it if I should have it submerge and get stuck on the bottom. This time, I intentionally de-ballasted it enough to insure that it would not be able to submerge.

Those are live fish to the lower left. And a big puff to the lower right of some algae, probably Spirogyra, but I won't know for sure until I get around to looking at the sample which I took, under my microscope.

Would have liked to have gotten more of this one, but the skies turned black and we had five miles to pedal home.

Another radio-controlled model submarine, that I easily forget that I have, unless something makes me think of it. This one is much smaller, simpler, and generally less impressive than the other. Small enough to operate very comfortably in a bathtub, unlike my other one. In fact, here I am running it in a common cooking pot.

I organise a public model flying display that brought in model pilots from all over the country, even as far afield as Northern Ireland! A few shots from the weekend.
