Rechargeable batteries?

Re: Recharagble batteries?

Out of curiosity, does anyone know roughly how many flashes they get with a full charged set of batteries? Reason I'm asking is because I've just bought a yongnuo 468II Flash and don't know wether I should order 1 or 2 sets of batteries for it..

One set of Eneloops is probably very sufficient for most people. I would start that way, and test your experience.

I've never seen that flash, but if it uses four batteries, my guess for Eneloops would be around 200 full power flashes, (plus or minus maybe 30). And roughly twice that many half power flashes, and about four times that many 1/4 power flashes, etc. If you leave it on long periods, then it probably depends on how its standby mode works too.

That is a lot of flashes, and unless you really work the flash unusually hard, Eneloops should easily last a few weeks, with ample opportunity to recharge them. You can always recharge "early and often", which is no problem for NiMH. Which also depends on how your charger works, but maybe an hour or less for most recharges, unless you really drain them.... the time and effort is no big deal now and then.

Re: Recharagble batteries?

Hi all, flash arrived today and looking to order batteries. Was looking at reviews for the eneloops, came across one which says the normal eneloop are better than the eneloop xx because they have slower discharge and can be recharged upto 1500 times compared to the eneloop xx which are rated at 500 recharges... Anyone came across this before or have any input?

Apparently the normal ones are rated at 2000mah and have slower self discharge than the xx which are rated at 2500mah.

Definitely not :) was just doing some research and got confused!! Will get the XX ones, also seen some very good reviews of the Maha Powerex MH C9000 charger...

The regular eneloops will not handle flash. The XX are going to be the better choice.

Say what? I must not understand what you said, because what you said is just plain crazy. Have you any evidence for this statement? Seems like virtually everyone swears by the standard Eneloops for their flash.

The Eneloop XX has 20% more capacity, for twice the price. Not a great bargain.

I swear by (plain vanilla) Eneloops in my flash units... Maybe the "XX" flavor are better by some benchmark but the plain vanilla Eneloops have never failed me.

If I was in some sort of doubt, I think I'd just pack a spare set.

I've been using the plain white Eneloops in my SB-700 with no issues. I can see an extra 20% capacity being worth the cost to someone who's out shooting all day at a wedding or something, but for twice the price I'd just buy two sets and have double the capacity. Particularly if the XX's are only being advertised as being able to be recharged 1/3 of the cycles that the normal ones are.

Re: Recharagble batteries?

I have been doing this for a very long time. I'm not concerned with the cost.

I shoot weddings that are over 9 hours and I don't want to swap batteries 3 times while on site. I also sometimes shoot 2 weddings in one day.

XX. Is better in every single way other than price.

I'm not going to skimp and be cheap when this is my career. My 2 cents.

Re: Recharagble batteries?

Found an offer from Germany for the powerex charger and a set of eneloop xx for 65 euros delivered (roughly 90 US Dollars). Is that a good price?

I don't know about prices in Germany, but the Maha C9000 is ideal for standard Eneloops. Because, its default charge rate is 1 amp, which is the ideal 1/2 C rate for 2000mah Eneloops. That means you can just insert the batteries and walk away, and that's what you get. If you wanted 1/2 C for 2400mah, then you have to stop and adjust each slot to 1.2 amps (which it easily does, but it is four extra steps every time).

It does a fine job, but I hardly ever use any of its extra features (condition, discharge, etc), but it is a very interesting charger, in that its LCD shows how many mah were recharged into each one. This tells you the previous state of discharge, which I like to know what is going on. It guides you about knowing when to recharge next time (assuming similar situations).

I think Corey retracted his statement on his other post below which is more accurate since I have both types of batteries.

No problem, the regular eneloops will work but will die faster, that's not good. Lol

Yes indeed. It really comes down to budget and price. If you take price/cost out of the equation than the XX are better. I am a pro, and my business pays my bills and cost of living. I also shoot very long days, all over the country and stay consistently busy. Will I skimp on a few dollars to save money, or shell out bucks for a longer lasting battery? You guessed it, I will pay the extra for longer lasting, even if it means buying a new set every 18 months or so.

With this being said. Eneloops are badass, even the regular versions. So if the regular Eneloops are more in your budget, get them. Eneloops are amazing.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

NB: by a set I meant 4 batteries...

Re: Recharagble batteries?

I am another one using the regular eneloops... I could not justify the cost increase for my useage... (Not a pro and do NOT shot all day..)

I have been very pleased for my use (consumer type) but can see where someone using a lot of flash in business would want the XX.
