Raw images strange border

everything I shoot seems washed out, lacking sharpness and colour and just has no 'punch'

You describe perfectly what a non processed raw file looks like vs a jpg. This is normal, I don't know about the border issue. Try getting a copy of Lightroom and then more people can advise on specific problems.

Thanks again for all the comments guys :) Have had a look at view NX and a play with the files. The RAW files come up as NEF and there is an option to view the RAW data, I think I will use htis from now on. Thanks for all the help :)
Here is one of the RAW files that I have edited with viewNX, my focusing was a bit lazy and I could have used iso 100 as it was a very bright day, am I going in the right direction here? DSC_0772.jpg

Hi

Just been to the beach and shot some raw images, this camera continues to disappoint. some of the raw images when viewed in UFraw had a strange border around them, could someone explain what this is? I have converted one to jpeg to show. I am constantly getting poor results with this camera, I used a Pentax sp500 film for years and got some great results, just can't seem to get to grips with this one :-(

Cheers.

Hi Mike,

i think I can help you here. As you are using UFRAW I think you must be using linux right? First of all, congrtulations on a great operating system!!!
I use LM distro and am very happy with it.

I also like you tried UFRAW as it is easy to install from the synaptic repo database and offers a variety of useful functions. I also had this strange border untill I realised that it was the distortion of the lens! You have to select and compensate for this under one of the setting, cant remember which one now but it is there.

My next piece of advice, stop using UFRAW. Get yourself either RAWTHERAPEE or if you are feeling very adventurous get darktable, which many claim is comparable to lightroom.

If you have any further questions please let me know.

In my experience darktable is clearly supperior to rawtherapee, which I have found to be lå king [meaning "lacking", for those of you who don't understand Danish auto correct ;)] in image quality. There can have come substantial updates since I last tried it, so I would advise you to try both and keep the one you like :)

Now I am confused. What is a 3rd-party raw converter?

There are a few software programs that claim can do better job at Raw translating. Raw Therapy for one and sometimes these don't have the lens specifications for all lenses and don't apply the lens corrections correctly (well that does sound strange doesn't it). If you google "raw software" you'll find a few of them I'm quite sure.
