I don't know what camera you have, but they're probably all the same.

This is from page 249 of the D3300 reference manual:

The higher models generally also have an option so you can rename the DSC_ prefix, which is good to do when you roll over at 9999 (so you don't have multiple files with same file name).

I think the OP thinks the file numbers to reset to 0001 when a new card is inserted. It can be done by resetting the file numbering in the camera's menus as you mention, but that may create far more problems when images are transferred to a computer as there will be multiple images with the same filename.

This. It can be a real PIA checking if you have the same file or different files with the same numbers, which to delete, which to rename .

I just save each shoot under different subdirectories. DSC_1234 may be found under Blue Bridges 2013_04_02, Pagoda 2014_08_13 and Downtown at Night 2015_02_03. When I'm finished with my post processing, they're renamed (ie, DSC_1234 becomes Sample Image 1234).

I agree that having a few different images with the same file name is quite messy, and can cause problems later.

But the OP question was "how to restart numbering at 1?"
and that answer is clear and in the manual.

Agreed, not sure it is the best idea. However, the numbering definitely is going to roll over at 9999 anyway. It is going to happen, a few times.

Not all of the camera models allow renaming the DSC_ prefix (which is my own technique). Nikon could have made the file name be more digits, like DSC65535.
