Random Nikon 24mm f1.8G vs 50mm f2 comparison

So I bought a Nikon AF-S 24mm f1.8G ED lens for my D2x, and when viewing the test images, I was stunned about how much it appears to render like my 50mm f2. Then I happened to look at pictures that I took with the 50mm with my D40x. Hmm, they look nearly identical.

Now this is the first time that the pictures from these cameras look so much alike when they render distinctly differently otherwise.

I knew from the beginning however that my 50mm f2 would likely outperform this new to me lens as it has managed to outperform every lens I have pitted it against since I bought it in 1975. And yes, using this 50mm lens on my D2x does so far lead to higher resolution images than from the 24mm when viewed on my 2K Eizo monitor. But they otherwise render very similarly.

I will have to test the 2 lenses using deep matte prints to see how much resolution this 24mm can muster against this benchmark 50mm.

I don't know. I need a way to share full uncompressed images.

Guidelines to adding a photo to your post.

1. Resize photo to 1000px on the long side.
2. Resolution set to 72ppi (Pixels Per Inch)

These guidelines will be good for viewing on a computer but will not be good for printing. This will help safeguard your copyright.

You can show the detail comparison without putting full-size files into the thread. Within Marilynne's 1000-pixel long-edge guideline, post a reduced whole-frame view for orientation, then separate native-pixel crops from the original files, each no more than 1000 pixels on its long side. Crop those detail views without resizing them; do not crop the already-reduced overview.

Label each crop with camera, lens, aperture and whether it is from the centre or edge. A 100% crop lets readers inspect the recorded detail without fitting the entire sensor image onto a 2K display. Keep the same export sharpening and noise reduction for both.

For a lens comparison, use the D2x for both lenses if possible. Bringing in the D40x changes the camera and its processing as well as the lens, so similar-looking renderings would not isolate what the two lenses are doing.

One distinction worth keeping clear: changing the 72 ppi print-resolution setting alone is not the same operation as reducing the pixel dimensions. Adobe's Image Size documentation separates those settings. A JPEG crop is still compressed, so call it a detail preview rather than an uncompressed original. Full originals would need a separately permitted sharing method, not an oversized forum attachment.
