A state of emergency was declared late Tuesday in 20 Eastern Washington counties, including Yakima, Kittitas, Klickitat and Benton counties, due to multiple wildfires.
The wildfires are threatening homes, businesses, public property and natural resources in many parts of the state as fire crews face continued severe fire weather conditions, according to the proclamation signed by Lt. Gov. Brad Owen.
At least three fires were burning in Yakima and Kittitas counties late Tuesday, where a red flag warning of dangerous fire conditions is in effect today.
The state declaration allows officials to get help from the Washington National Guard and the State Guard if needed. It also directs state agencies to help local governments in responding to wildfires.
State officials are worried extreme fire weather conditions and the lack of firefighting resources in the Northwest could hamper future firefighting efforts in the state.

The state’s largest wildfire, the Mills Canyon blaze near the town of Entiat, is now 40 percent contained and holding steady at about 35 square miles.
