Pulled the trigger on a Z50ii for the Pup

My daughter has had some intermittent issues with her D5600 in the last couple months. We decided that she probably needs to replace it and perhaps do some upgrading, although she really doesn't particularly want to learn a new system. She also came to the conclusion that she was going to have to make the switch to mirrorless sooner or later, so this is probably the time to do it. She tried out my Z5, and Z7ii, I offered to let her try the new Z8, but she didn't think she would like it. After much discussion and thinking she came to the decision that the Z50ii would be the best option at this point in time. She is not a technically oriented individual and kind of wants some of the options that the consumer grade gear has to offer. The big upside to the 50ii is the new AF operation.

I very gently pushed her this week to make a decision before potential price hikes.

Anyway, the new camera is supposed to get here tomorrow. Ordered it with the 12-28 lens, as she uses her 10-20 a lot, and tried it out on the 7ii with the FTZ and had some issues with it adapted. She has a 105 macro and 70-300 as well as an FTZ adapter, both of which worked fine adapted on the 7ii, so she should be set for a while. She almost never uses anything in a traditional normal zoom range, and can use either her 18-55 or 18-200 with the FTZ if needed.

Here's hoping that this camera will suit her and her needs.

Well, it arrived today. She had a chance to look at it, and power it up, making initial changes. No chance to actually take any pictures. I got a bit of a look. It's about the same size and weight as the Z5, and very similar control layout. Build quality looks better than the lower end DSLRs such as the D3400 and D5600. I like the fact that it has U/1,2,3 settings on the mode dial.

It's supposed to rain the next few days here, so I doubt it will be getting a real test drive for a while.

They cheaped out and didn't include a charger. I got a kit deal from B&H that included a spare Nikon battery and a 3rd party charger as well as a decent SD card. One nice thing about the charger is that it includes a cord and input to charge the battery in the car.

The kit that came with my Z8 from B&H included a really nice messenger style bag. The Pup latched onto that for times when she didn't want to carry that much gear. The bag that came with this was a Nikon bag, but it looks more like a small purse. I don't believe the camera would fit in it with anything other than one of the super slim lenses for the Z cameras.

I'll report back when she has a chance to use it a bit.

Don't expect a charger packed in with devices that have USB-C connectors. The EU forbids that now, so we also become subjected to their regulation for the convenience of manufacturers trying to be compliant with the e-waste mandates.

Well, I got one with my Z8 that I purchased earlier this year, so I hoped she would get one with this camera. I also hoped that they would use the same battery as my other Z cameras, alas, no.
