Problem with D5100

Can anyone suggest what might be wrong with my D5100? From new, it would simply freeze - it would turn on, but I could get no other response, couldn't depress the shutter release, nothing. After a while, it would work again. The problem would reoccur particularly when I changed settings frequently - I was leaning how to use it and experimenting with new lenses. After several months it was freezing for days, finally 10 days before the company I bought it from (unfortunatley in Hong Kong) accepted its return under warrantee. Apparently neither the company nor Nikon in HK can find the problem - luckily, it did freeze for them too, after working intermittently. I tried all the usual things - turning it off, removing the battery and cards - but to no avail. I am not happy with the company's response that I must expect that it will 'go a little crazy sometimes'! Can anyone help Nikon, Camera Paradise and me, provided I ever get my D5100 back - it has been nearly 5 months now.

That's the lamest excuse I have ever heard. I would demand they replace it. I do not see where you live but you need to deal with more responsible dealers. I hope for you that you can resolve this.

Wow, one guy has trouble and you condemn them all. Love the internet expert.

profound thinking about stuff

Look here you 2 post wonder . . . . search this forum and you will see there have been several here on this forum that has had issues with their D5100 and D5200. I also have found through many searches, in my attempts to help these members with their issue, a lot of issues with these two cameras. More issues than I would want to chance.

Touch wood - my D5100 is and has been fine. When "it" has played up it has always been me and the settings I used without changing back.

Of course to an internet expert, someone can only have an opinion if their life has first been wasted posting on the internet.

So what makes you think my opinion is final, or even expert? I simply didn't buy one of these camera's because of what I saw was too many issues reported. That is my business, not yours. So quit wasting your time being a jerk on the internet. No one asked you to judge me by my opinion.

Oh, I forgot to ask you @photofree, if the internet is wasting your life then why are you here? But I really know why. You, and others like you, troll the forum without registering and then you pop in with a post when someone says something that rubs you wrong.

the only times i had a problems with "freezing" is when the camera would not auto focus. I would be trying to take a candid shot without looking thru the view finder and the camera would refuse to do anything. Worked ok when i got a good focus point.
If nikon has seen the problem i would demand a new camera.

I use my D5100 for almost 2 years . Not one single day I've got a problem. I am a lucky man. And I shot a lot nearly 20.000 clicks already.

Photofree, your way of responding to posts will absolutely get you on the most disliked member list. There are other forums that might suit your style.

Thanks Ron - that is exactly what I told the company, but no joy yet in getting a replacement or even a repair. I'm in Australia where camera prices are comparatively very high. Many Aussies are tempted by much cheaper deals in Asia but, as I have found to my cost, they do not come with an international warrantee or our excellent consumer protection. I think I have a lemon, but have just read of the same problem with the D5100 on another forum, so was wondering if it is common to the model. Unfortunately I sold my trusty and sturdy D80. I have since bought a D7100 from my usual store in OZ, where they know their stuff. I am very happy with it so far ... and trying not to think about how much poorer I am!

.Well you can get a lemon sometimes in any product. That is why it is so necessary to deal with reputable dealers who will make bad events right. Write this off as a lesson learned early that will serve you well in the future. But keep after those rascals, do not let them get over you if you can help it. From everything I have heard you have a great new camera. So best of luck to you. Keep us informed of any future disposition on your problem

I haven't had any issues with my D5100 so far. Though lately I haven't been able to enjoy my Nikons much. But it sounds like your D5100 is a lemon, and I'd seriously consider taking it back for a replacement, it your able to.
I hope you get the issue solved soon! :)
